View Full Version : Why don't computers come with 'turbo' buttons anymore?
Those things were the best.
Same reason they don't come with 8" floppy drives. ;)

That laptop's turbo button has a different purpose to the buttons on old machines.
DOS programs used to use the CPU's clock speed to run themselves - so if you wanted to play an older game on a faster machine, you'd need switch off the turbo button. This down-clocked the CPU so the game would run at the intended speed.
In short, it was needed for compatibility.

PROTIP: Turbo buttons only made the machine slower.
