im pretty sure most tv's make this sound when you turn them on, although im not sure about ancient tv's and new plasma/flatscreens, but anyway...

whenever i turn a tv on, i here this really high "static" noise. its almost like a sine wave(i think thats what its called anyway). what is this noise? what is it caused by?

also, some times ill all of a sudden hear a similar noise when im no where near technology, but when that happens, its usually sharp and eventually "dies down."

and when i focus, i can hear a similar sound just about anytime.

has anyone else noticed this and/or know what it is?

could it be the matrix?

I hear the high pitched TV sounding stuff too, even when im not near a TV or even when im outside. I live right next to a small airport so could be their radio or radar. Call me crazy but i think our brains can pick up on EM.

You're not special

Human hearing - 20Hz to 20KHz

And the thing you're hearing in crt TVs, it's the flyback transformer, usually makes 14khz-17khz. That's why you can hear it.

No doubt i have some hearing loss, but in another neighborhood near me the sound is somewhat directional, meaning that its a little louder when youre facing a certain direction. Its really weird.

A dodgy transformer in an LCD's backlight inverter can make a high-pitched squeal which dies down...but noobglitch is otherwise pretty much spot on.

Are you guys talking about that really high pitched sound you hear when nothing is going on around you, or when you're focusing on hearing it? It sounds like a really high whine that sometimes fluctuates in frequency.

Yep, it drove me nuts for 5 years until someone told me I wasn't crazy (little did THEY know) and about the flyback. Just go buy an LCD or Plasma, you'll never hear it again :D

I can hear to, just about anywhere.
the only time i can't hear it is when i'm in the mountains surrounded by trees.
