Also, nostalgia, and whatever it is that makes people think solving puzzles is fun. Competition is a lot of it, even though I don't usually have human competition. I don't know why I would want to defeat a computer program, but I do.

Cynical, but true.

The question is, essentially, "Why do people play games at all?"

And the answer is still entertainment...aside from cases where "games" may actually be a form of training or preparation, in the sense of "war games" or such, though it's worth pointing out that supposedly people also play video games in the interest of this.

So people play video games for essentially the same reasons they play games at all, and those reasons are relatively few and simple to understand.

I play video games to not think about things in my life. Whether it be girl problems, hard day at work, or anything of that nature I just sit down and enjoy mindless fragging. It really helps me take my mind off of things.

It's entertaining and it's something to do. It's like asking why people read, get online, drink, do drugs, listen to music, have gardens, or whatever else you can do as a hobby. They love it and it occupies time.

I know exactly where you're coming from with the question as I don't see what people see in video games. I used to like em when I was younger but grew out of them fairly fast. I didn't think I would grow out of them but I sure as hell did.
