Hello everyone, I'm new to this website and I just want a few tips/pointers on car hopping (or car "shopping"). I plan on sneaking out tonight and going at around 1:30 AM. Its really cold out so im wearing a big coat and cargo pants. This will be my first time car hopping so I could really use some advice. Thanks!

1:30 might be a bit too early. Don't take any obvious risks, plenty of targets.. and don't do it anywhere near your house. I wouldn't get used to doing that shit though, it's not worth the potential consequences..

when you look to see if a car is unlocked check the dash board. if you see any red lights flashing, move on. [means there's an alarm] and...check glove box, center counsel, and the trunk. make sure you look for people before hand too.

Well, what time would you suggest? Its monday so people will be going to bed at around 11 for work tomarrow.

11:30 is usually good, but 12-4 is safest. wouldn't expect to find much at night but i've found some nice stuff. best time/places are mid-afternoon at supermarkets and grocery stores, or a mall. get much better things that way.

Yeah, im going to walk to a neighborhood thats about a mile from my house..its about 4 degrees outside so its going to be a short run though.

ive done that shit before but only walking around with 2 of my homies belligerantly drunk, one night i came up on a sony cybershot 10mp 3x zoom, sold that bitch for a half ounce of dro. same night we went into a car found the garage dooor opener, opened it up about halfway, and went in, we did not have a vehicle at the time but we came out with like 7 budlites and a bottle of yagermeister that was in the freeezer there was a computer and tv stereo in there all that shit, the most awesome come up was a chrome p-25 with the woodgrain handle, it got a lil dirty so i had to sell it if you know what i mean. dude you come up one some nice shit doing that ive gone thru 10 cars on one block and not found shit so dont get discouraged if you dont find anything for a while, just move thru a different hood

So how did it go?

Here's how I do it. I go between 3am and 4am, and wear regular kind of clothing with something to cover my face (bandana, neckwarmer, etc). Don't bring your phone or anything at all with you, because it's just something that can be dropped accidently of you have to run fast. I then walk down a street (those townhouse areas of neighbourhoods with many little streets are good because they are so close together, the cars are much closer together, and they usually have many places/directions to run) and check all the cars I walk by quickly (speedwalk!) If there's no flashing light, check the handles quickly on the doors (Ive found cars where 3 doors are locked, but one isn't before). If it's all locked, just speedwalk down the street to the next one. Also if the car I'm checking is right up near the garage, I check to see if the garage is unlocked, it's very easy to open a garage door quietly by hand, and people don't expect it nearly as much. Once finding a car unlocked, get in, and CLOSE THE DOOR, neighbours glancing out there window as they take an early morning piss will notice a car door open, and the light on from it being open, then check the obvious, dash, between the seats, under seats, backseat, compartments, then pop the trunk as you get out and check the boot quickly then shut that and keep moving, use pathways, and try to stay away from sketchy streets (ones that are long with no turnoffs, dead ends, etc.) If I get something good, I move a few streets over, if I get something really nice (ipod, laptop, nice camera) I go home right away. I only started car shopping this winter, but for the hour I go out every few nights, I always find around 3-7 cars, and usually at least 1 garage. Winter might seem like a bad time because it's harder to run and stuff, but I ALWAYS go out if theres a snowstorm at night, thats the best oppurtunity, the wind will cover all of your sound, and the lack of visibility covers you too, I have NEVER EVER seen a single person in my area out between 3am and 4am in a snowstorm.
