Dear Totse,

I recently turned 18 and was given a Chinese type 56 SKS for my birthday. The SKS is nice and is fun to shoot, however 7.62x39 ammo is expensive around here ($16 for 20rds) and ordering online isn't much cheaper due to shipping costs. I cant afford to shell out $100 or so dollars for a tin because im going to college soon and ill need the money. Also not to mention it is extremely loud and in order to shoot it I need to drive out to my friends house in the country. So ive decided to sell the SKS to a local dealer and use that money to buy a .22 rifle that I can use to plink and hunt small game with. Im considering the Ruger 10/22, the Romanian training rifle which was brought up in another thread, and the marlin. So out of those 3 which would you get?

10/22. That should be your only choice.

Get ready to check your e-mail, I got some more info for you.

Anyways, speaking of cheap .22s

Check out the CMP's Rifle sales. They've got everything there to give a competitive shooter wet himself. :D

I loved my 10/22 with 30 rounders.... shoot in your basement, your backyard, down the street... it's just 'firecrackers'. Plus I was getting a deal on federal so 500rds = $7 = shoot allllll day. PLUS I got a free box of .22 birdshot (which I never knew existed) and even though it wouldn't break a bottle at 50 feet, it sure did WASTE the local small fauna!

I too support the 10/22. Very nice gun, very reliable, and comes with the Ruger guarantee. :)

Marlin 60 puts (1 out of)10/22 to shame.

The Marlin 60 is a very nice rifle, and a good choice if you like the stock configuration. The advantage of the 10/22, in stark contrast to the Marlin, is the proliferation of aftermarket parts. So varied are the add-ons and doo-dads that one can build a 10/22 without a single Ruger part in it...

Are you fucking shitting me? Thats ridiculous and to think I was pissed about shops around here raising the price from $5 for 20rds to $6 for 20rds of 7.62x39. Wow I feel bad for you what state are you in if you don't mind me asking.

The variety of aftermarket 10/22 parts is fucking astounding. It's its own cottage industry! Mine is stock though and I like it how it is though I should probably pick up various mags for it.

Yea, those things are useless, i got a box of the winchester ones years ago, 90% of the shot wouldn't go all the way through one piece of cardboard at around 5m and i had one expload my gun which sucked balls and sparyed shit into my eyes that made them hurt for about a week afterwards. My uncle used to shoot mice and rats with them in his living room while watching tv.

That owns!

I used to shoot my cat with the old Red Ryder when he fucked with the Christmas tree, but rat shooting in the comfort of your own home rules( well, minus the rat infestation!).

.22 birdshot sounds like a air rifle going off. And a air rifle is probably more deadly to small varmints.

Also you can use birdshot rounds in semi auto .22s but you just have to work the action by hand.

I agree the marlin model 60 is decent for the money.

Why not go in with a bunch of friends when they purchase 7.62 in bulk, those 1000 round or more purchases can start to save you mucho! :D

You're not "just" insane, you're nuts! Selling a gun you got as a gift is outrageous.

Save up for a 10-22 or a Remington pump, but keep the SKS.

The .22 I'd recommend to a new shooter would be a Kimber Model 82 Government.

Granted you might not be the type who likes that rifle. :(

They're a nice looking rifle but the prices I've seen have been absolutely ridiculous. The cheapest price I've seen on one was expensive enough that I could've bought 2 or 3 10/22's.

For what the kimber is capable of it is a steal. The kimber is so great, it can't even be compared to a stock 10/22.

It's all about what is on the rifle and how it is built. I personally adore anshutz, but who doesn't?

The AR-7 was nice. Now the design got sold to Henry Repeating Arms and renamed the "US Survival" rifle, which by most accounts is a piece of crap.
