View Full Version : Ammonium Nitrate Impurities
While at a certain department store SWIM found a bag that had the following markings:
1.17 ammoniacal nitrate
26.83 urea nitrate
the bag is filled with yellowish crystals, whitish crystals, and some uneven grayish gravel type looking grains, which would be the ammonium nitrate to the untrained eye?

Ammoniacal, oh boy. You're gonna have some fun getting that calcium shit off it. Other than that I wouldn't bother trying to separate the UN from AN unless you're using it for something different than what I suspect you are.
Oh, wait, it might not be CAN. Uhhhh, try dissolving some in HCl, see what happens. Bubbles = fuck.

SWIM doesn't work.
That isn't practical for pyrotechnic purposes, do some fucking research.

As far as HE would go, it should work. But if that's what you're planning to use it for, you should be able to find all the required info by yourself.

Urea Nitrate is an explosive but it would probably be a pain in the ass to seperate it from all the impurities, plus the ammonium nitrate itself may or may not have been bonded with ammonium sulfate, which can be dissolved.
