View Full Version : How do you wash sweaters?
I got some ncie sweaters and they are in need of a wash. I dont know how to wash them though, dont they shrink?
Labels are absent so i cant use them for reference. I believe they are wool or cotton.

cold water, then dry them on the line,
Heat will make them shrink with moisture
just don't expose the nice sweaters to both!
I am also a collector of sweaters.
so just hand wash them in a tub of cold water? No detergent? whats the method for hand washing btw?

Umm hand washing isn't even needed, jsut use the "cold" cycle on your washing machine. then hang them on the line.
If you do want to hand wash you need something like a washboard, or just plain old elbow grease, detergent should be O.K to use
Wait, why is there no label  Shrinking wool is caused by two things - heat and agitation. You can prevent heat in the washing machine, but you can't prevent agitation. That's just how washing machines work - they swish your clothing around so that it rubs against itself and the other items in there. If you must use the washing machine, set it to Delicate cycle, use woolite instead of normal detergent, LAY FLAT and air dry, shape the sweater, pulling it gently to go back into the orignial shape and size (If it drys in it's small shape it will stay like this permanently) Always LAY-FLAT when drying. Don't dry on the line.

Dry cleaning is a good bet most of the time if they don't lose your shit.
