pokemon died after the first two seasons. i'm pretty sure that's when they introduced more pokemon besides the original 150 also.

You cant rag on the second generation, they were actually planned from the begining and are from the same minds as the first 150. There is proof in episode 1 when ash sees Hoho.

This being said, I hate pokemon so much. Hating puns does not help, as the entire concept is based on pun jokes. But I will admit that pokemon is far better than the other 'spin offs' like digimon and yugioh.
