View Full Version : Buying a PS3
Have been looking to pick up a PS3 for a while now, and having recently come into a bit of money I thought I might as well make that happen.
If I were to buy a new PS3, it would definitely be the 80gb ($399). I have no need for another 80gb, and as I understand, hard drive size is the only difference between these current SKUs.
However, the other option is to buy a previously discontinued SKU, most likely from eBay. The most preferred choice here would be the launch model 60gb. The PS2 compatible 80gb would also be good. I have only checked briefly but it looks as if I could get the 60gb for between $350-400.
I have a PS2 as well, so backwards compatibility isn't completely necessary, but it would somehow seem stupid to purchase a PS3 and then not be able to play my old PS2 games on it.
Any info on probably near-future price drops would be appreciated as well. Sony does have to keep up with that $200 360 arcade somehow, don't they?
My question is: what would you do, and why?

Well first of all prepare yourself for an onslaught of "Don't buy a PS3 buy an Xbox 360!" replies. I'm assuming you've already considered this/already have an xbox so i'm going to go ahead and help.
Your main concern seems to be with backwards compatability, I bought at 40GB when it was the 40GB and the 60GB (W/Backward Compatability). Mainly down to two factors:
1) The 60GB was no longer in any shops and if it was, it was second hand. If i'm going to be spending in excess of £300 then I want to spend it on something new!
2) I already had a PS2 so Backwards Compatability wasn't too much of an issue.
I'm still pretty bummed that my version doesn't play PS2 games (nor does it have that chrome rim :() but to be honest, thats just a sentimental thing. I really havn't considered playing any old PS2 games because i've been too occupied with my ever growing PS3 collection.
I say just get the 80GB; you still have your PS2 so its not as if you're losing out. I've not heard anything on a price cut either but you might see some deals in the January sales. Sony are out on a loss and are providing a free online service so I really don't see any price cuts soon.
Also, about the PS2 software emulation that the later 60GB models did. Why was that removed? Surely if its just software then they can put it on a firmware update? Am I being retarded?
Thanks for the reply...Yes I already have a 360, and am currently bracing myself for the flood of pro-360 posts.
You're right about my main concern being BC, and I can definitely relate with what you're saying here...especially with the fact that I already have a PS2 (which is one of the thicker ones and is a complete tank...lasted so long without even a hiccup...I see no break-down in the near or distant future).
As for your question about the software compatibility...your answer is as good as mine. There must have been some hardware aspect to it, as stupid as that sounds.

I recently purchased a 160 gb ps3. Considering the difference between the 80 and 160 is 100 dollars and you get a free game with it i chose this. The BC issue doesnt really bother me at all due to me owning NO ps2 games anymore and I have one PS1 game which ps3 still does play so I am not worried about that. If you do wanna play a baller ass PS1 game pick up diablo 1 for playstation. Awesome game
I forgot about that. Uncharted seems pretty solid. If the 160 came with another dualshock I would consider it more seriously, but right now the 80gb is the clear choice for me.
Good to here about the PS1 games though.

if you can manage to get ahold of it anymore, get the 80GB/MGS4 bundle. it's what I got. great package. even though you may have a PS2, it's best to get as much as you can out of your PS3, if possible (and at no extra cost).

The PS3 is overall a good console. Especially when the price for blu-ray movies drops. Currently they're a bit too expensive. As more get released, they'll slowly start replacing DVDs and their price will go down.
Basically if you like the PS2 you'll like the PS3. Nothing really new, safe for HD graphics, but nothing really bad either. 2009 will be a great year for games too. If you can afford both the 360 and PS3, why not? They both have some decent exclusives so if money isn't a problem, owning both is definitely advisable.

Not a bad idea. A PS3 with full backwards compatibility is fucking awesome.

Since you already have a 360 (the better next-gen console as far as game selection, I think most would agree), a PS2 (tons of great games), I wouldn't be in a rush to get a PS3.
I mean, if you want it for the games, Resistance really isn't that great. The sequel looks pretty damn cool, but I got bored of the first one within a couple of hours. If you want it for the Blu-Ray, then you're just shelling out 400 bucks so you can buy a bunch of expensive Blu-Ray discs and watch some movies a couple of times with a really nice resolution. Sounds like spending money just for the sake of spending money, if you ask me.

If money truly isn't an issue (ie. He's got thousands of dollars to spare), then he should do whatever he wants. If he's a typical Totsean, (ie. 15-17, no job/minimum-wage job), then it's an idiotic use of his money.

In fact, I do fit this description. It doesn't feel like an idiotic use of my money though...gaming has always been a hobby of mine and I don't feel like arguing about better uses of $200 (I'm splitting the PS3 with my brother...that's the plan any ways).
I don't really know if I would ever buy a blu-ray movie either...probably only rent. If I did buy, it would be bargain bin or some shit like that.
This threads been helpful...appreciation to anyone who put in a response.
