View Full Version : If you agree with someone, that doesn't necessarily mean they're intelligent.
It doesn't necessarily mean you're intelligent either. By "intelligent," I basically mean that your brain works well; you can process information, remember it, and use it all efficiently. All too often, however, people use the word "intelligent" to mean "that which agrees with my opinions, beliefs, and views." And they use it after just one brief post by one person. Example:
Poster A: "Blah blah blah blah blah, etc., blah."
Poster B: "OMG I agree, you are so intelligent."
That's a stupid (and, more importantly, unwise) thing to think, because your ego starts plugging up your analytical, objective thought once you think that. Dumb people can have smart beliefs and brilliant ideas. Brilliant people can have dumb beliefs and stupid ideas. I know dumb people I agree with on many things, and smart people I disagree with on many things.
Now, I would like everyone to respond to this thread by telling me how smart I am because you agree with me.:)

I think that if an otherwise stupid person came up with a profound perspective, he is either intellegent or he copied someone elses view.
In my expirience, stupid people cannot comprehend certain points of views, and usually keep quite or change the topic when they are confronted. Like the fucking people who end every debate after 5 minutes with the "Let's agree to disagree" bullshit. If a person can argue and understand a abstract or intellectual concept enough to discuss it rather than just present it, then they are probably at least slightly clever.
If people just agree with you they don't nessisarily understand it, they just don't want to argue it or discuss it. I don't think that makes them dumb but it doesn't prove that they are intellegent.

The ego is unbelievably important to a person. You'd be surprised at the extreme lengths people (and the mind) can go to in order to preserve their own ego. The mind can literally reshape a person's perception of reality in order to avoid severe damage to the ego, or can even construct an entirely new personality which subsumes the old one. It's impossible to avoid accumulating such ways of thinking.

Intelligence is in the eye of the beholder; what you believe to be fact shapes what you perceive to be intelligent. Given the nature of how western society is set up, and that academia is nothing more than a tool people use to exploit the economy, intelligence is often times deceiving. There is no use to try judge anyone's intelligence if they are from the USA, Britain, Ireland, Italy, Spain, France, Germany, Finland, Norway, Australia etc. as the west is actually far behind and back asswards as far as academia and just about everything else goes. No one knows anything about anything here I am afraid. Intelligence is a lot like beauty, morality, and self-awareness it doesn't exist outside of our brain.

Not to my knowledge.
MLK, intelligence can be measured separately from an academic context.

I'm smarter than you
I agree with you, but you're not very smart, or at least, if you are, it wasn't demonstrated in your post.

it appears to me as if you'd confused knowledge with intelligence....
Knowledge =X= intelligence....
the ability to spell a-z is knowledge...
the ability to creatively rearrange those ABCs into something that serve your purpose well.....that's intelligence.
