With all due respect--"Logan's Run"? Sheesh--silly premise and cheesy FX.

Awww, come on now. You let "Independence Day" slide past your radar on that criteria, but attack a 1976 classic?
...maybe for some sci-fi films have the same 30-year-death-sentence human beings did in the movie's silly premise.

Alien/Aliens.
Alien/Aliens.
I was gonna mention these two but as I was waiting for my slow ass computer to load the reply to topic screen they slipped my mind.
Aliens is made of nothing less than pure win.

Maybe the acting was sub-par (except for Ustinov), but I thought the story was good. It won a Special Achievement Academy Award for Visual Effects, but a year later Star Wars came out and set a new standard for special effects. The FX do seem cheesy today, but in 1976 it was impressive.

ID is almost beneath contempt, having shot past absurdity into the realm of sentimental, fantasy--more a buddy pic than SF. Thirty years from now, I doubt if anyone wll remember it.
LR is at least notable for the light it sheds on 70s pop culture--but I stand by my description of it as a film.
Note, too, the film I recommended is way older than 30 years.

Point taken. I may have to re-think my position.

I see two Tarkovsky films in there. :D
I'd agree with Stalker, Zardoz, and Brazil. All three are excellent. Stalker was really meaningful to me, especially considering that most of the cast died early deaths probably due to the massive amounts of exposure to the pollution in the area filming the movie twice. (See all that foam when Stalker is lying in the river? That's not natural... :()
Dune and Videodrome and good as well, but it's been a long time since I saw them.
None of the Stargate TV series' should be on these lists, they're deliberate parodies of good science fiction. You guys know that, right?

Doesn't make em bad?
Show was one of the only interesting things on TV for years.
Serenity! Can't believe no-one's said that yet. Gorgeous sci-fi movie.

And Firefly...
The new Battlestar Galactica is pretty sweet so far (so far being Season 1, for me). The only other thing I can think of that I've seen recently is The Day the Earth Stood Still, the original.

you must not have many channels
Though it doesn't take place in space, "Sphere" qualifies as sci-fi.

There are a handful of "good" episodes but by and large it's just rehashes of shit that Star Trek did better the first time round.

I know many dont like it but I personally loveeddddd it
Anything JJ Abrams has his hands in is overhyped fanboy garbage. Anyone watched Alias? It's like somebody hired a hormonal 13 year old boy to write what he thought would be a cool James Bond TV show.

I would add a couple of B movies, but both very good in initial idea: They Live and The Hidden.
They live is Roddy Piper in his one good role outside the ring, alerting other humans to alien invasion. The Hidden has Kyle Mcdudeman? as an alien bounty hunter of sorts. In the humerous SCi Fi genre, I offer Glalaxy Quest. some very cool spec fx, S. Weaver in a push up bra, Hans Grubeman, Monk from Monk, Veronica Mars Dad and try to spot Rainn Wilson (Dwight from The Office) in an unbilled cameo.
Star Wars is barely science fiction. It is also shit.

The Thing (1982).
That's a good one. Also it reminded me of The Andromeda Strain, which I'll also have to get. I haven't seen it in years.
