Does anyone know of anything like Pimslar's audio tapes but specifically for vocabulary in Japanese? I find the tapes extremely useful but the vocabulary is weak...

I think Michel Thomas recently came out with a Japanese course.

Try that

teach yourself kana, and get a japanese dictionary that is intended for people learning it. I would imagine that it would be almost impossible to find a recording of someone reading out a dictionary.

Well, I did find someone doing just that but it fucking sucks because his accent is heavy when he reads the English definition and its not even Japanese heavy, he sounds mexican.

Japanese is a hard language to learn vocab wise by using dictionaries, its better to learn through context (sentences using the words)...

What do you want to learn? Sure that is true for verbs as you can grasp more easily what type they are if they are in a sentence, but if its an endless stream of nouns you are looking to remember the best thing to do is write down an assload of them, and use mnemonics to help you remember them.
Eg: kisa = grass... "what sounds like kisa? maybe kiss! haha, imagine someone kissing grass, who the fuck kisses grass?"
"Oi!" "Whats grass in Japanese?" "Oh shit, what was it? something to do with kissing it, kissing, kissing, oh! its kisa :)"
Guarantee you will remember nouns better by establishing mindless rabble to them that links many parts of your brain than just an English equivalent. Hearing and repeating will do you little good.
