I'm bored and off from school for a little, and was hoping I could carve some type of pipe. I've got a knife, some chisels and a drill, but I don't know anything about specifics.

I once spoke with a man who made carvings for a living. Upon asking how he went about carving an exquisitely crafted bird, he said, "I take a block of wood and cut away everything that doesn't look like a bird."

For the screen, you'll want a real pipe screen, or if you aren't 18, go to your local hardware store and search around in those little drawers until you find stainless steel sink screens, for the aerator in your sink. They're the perfect size.

There really aren't specifics on how to make them. Draw some sketches, figure out general dimensions on a regular pipe, and go at it.

You need to find what kind of wood you're going to make it out of first. Do some research on which types of wood are suitable for making pipes and then see what you can find in your area if you don't already know what you have available.

& I haven't smoked in quite a few years now so excuse the ignorance, but what else are kids these days using for screens besides standard sink screens? ;)

I advise that you do the following:

1) Use real wood that you go out and find in the woods yourself. No telling what chemicals could be in hardware store wood. Perferably use dry wood (wood that's been down for several months at least). You could cut a 2x2x8" block from a piece of firewood. Make sure that it's the right kind of wood. I imagine pine would be bad, and oak would be good, but you ought to do your homework on that.

2) drill the holes for the stem and bowl BEFORE you start carving. Then, if you fuck up, you can just start over and you didn't waste any time carving.

3) carve away everything that doesn't look like a pipe.

4) don't forget the screen.

Haha, yeah I guess so, I've always just used sink screens, but you can get brass screens [same size] at smoke shops. Either way, I suppose it doesn't REALLY matter.

Types of wood- Hardwoods=good, softwoods=bad. Working with stuff you find is definitely a good idea, bring a bow saw into the woods and hunt down a nice solid dead branch on a tree, maybe 3" diameter. If the branch doesn't fall after it dies it won't decompose because it's suspended in the air, as opposed to on the damp ground. And unless the tree had an insane insect infestation or something, the wood should be nice and solid, even though it's dead.

No, regardless of the wood you use, it probably won't burn. Softwood is more likely to, and if you have any very thin spots near the flame there's a chance that'll burn, but it's pretty damn easy to avoid that. Resin cakes up fast enough to protect the bowl.

Sentinel- I've never drilled holes before, that's probably a good idea. Yes, I have spent a couple hours on a pipe only to drill through the side be accident, that sucked.

Yeah that would be fucking terrible. I could easily see myself doing that. Drilling shouldn't be too bad. A drill press would make it a cinch but a hand drill will do too.

Alright so before this I didn't even know pipes had screens in them, it makes sense now... Except where does the screen go? (looking at the anatomy of a pipe diagram, would I put it halfway into the bowl?)

Also Should I carve a bowl, then drill a stem, and then use wood glue to put them both together?

No. Make them fit together tightly. You should be able to dismantle it to clean it.

Or you can just make it out of one solid block of wood.

As for the screen, I know nothing about smoking, but it looks like they go at the bottom of the bowl, separating the stem from the bowl.

The stem hole should intersect the bowl right at the bottom. The screen sits right above it, it will wedge in there easily. The way it works is as air is drawn in through the stem, instead of pulling only to one concentrated area and possibly pulling ash through into your mouth [as would happen without a screen], the little pocket of space below the screen allows air the be drawn in around the entire area of the bowl. And no scooby snacks!
