I have just had an email requesting that I ban someone for posting a picture of a burnt baby in the closed abortion thread.

Let me just reiterate my (and I'm guessing my fellow mods) stand on this kind of thing:

We don't ban or rather infract people for posting shocking/obscene/vile or naff images nor for any other kind of image if said images are in any way relevant to the thread in question. The exceptions are , rightly or wrongly, for kiddy porn (ie any -18 nekkidness) and pictures of totseans posted without permission. Those two things will get you perma banzored faster than a fast thing on silicon greased rails.

HOWEVER

If you want to post an image that many might consider 'shocking' then you post it as a link and not an [/img]. We don't need any more censorship on this site but I expect you to use your judgment as to whether an image should be posted as an [img] or a linky (anyone who clicks a totse linky gets all they deserve).

I agree. We don't need totse turning into a 4chan-like den of debauchery and sin, with people posting images just for shock value.

It's been rule here for as long as I can remember (so about last tuesday week-old age is a terrible thing!).

Seriously though, there is enough censorship and enough half arsed 'rules' on totse without me adding to them. I disagree with the 'no cp' rule but that's what Jeff has decided.

All I ask is that you use your judgment about when to post images or links. Some of us do have to access totse in public places/schools.

Obvious attempts at trolling notwithstanding, it simply makes sense to let even the most shocking and vile images onto Totse. This site was built around the principal behind the first amendment to the Constitution, which effectively says that everyone has the right to say anything they damn well please (with some exceptions for libel, slander, and the like). Without this guiding principal, half (or perhaps more) of us could very well end up in jail for publishing things on here that go against the wills and whims of the authorities. Furthermore, all of this vast amount of information could be taken down simply because most of it is radical and subversive.

Just think about how many articles you have read that graphically describe the construction of high explosives, the synthesis of illegal drugs, the hacking of protected software, and, in this section, the undesirable sexual practices of certain people. That could all disappear in an instant if we allow a small group of people to control the voices of the rest. Therefore, it makes sense that anything should be fair ground on this site's forums, unless it is a deliberate attempt to disrupt the site itself (trolling).

And if you are so concerned about others' opinions of what you view while exercising your Constitutional rights, just hit the minimize button when they come bye and do not use them as an excuse for why YOU are uncomfortable viewing such material.

I guess most posters weren't around when the goatse image was being spammed in every thread in every forum. IMG tags were banned for a long time, and I was actually pretty surprised when they came back a couple years ago. The fad for the interim had been tinyurl to try to disguise 'shocking' links.

These rules make far more sense than letting people post goatse everywhere or not letting people post with IMG tags at all. It's actually a pretty nice compromise. If you don't want to click on the link, don't click. Much better than having to scroll past 10 gaping assholes to respond to someone's post.

Well whatever people post, everyone should have the basic understanding that this is totse. You don't surf through this site at work or in front of anyone who will be offended by graphic images. I mean... seriously... the ad banner at the top of this page is either about WWJD for a klondike bar followed by a picture of an Anal Lube bottle or some cartoon of a girl with a dildo saying "ribbed for her pleasure". It seems pretty idiotic to complain about an image posted in a thread and not say a thing about the types of advertisements that run on this site.
