View Full Version : So I'm more than sure I want to sign my life away to the military

And I've got it narrowed down to 2 branches: Marines or Navy. I've always had it in my head that I'd be proud as hell to say I was a Marine, but I'm also brainy to the max so that's why I'm considering the Navy. I have a family history in both, and I'm good with a gun so that's not a problem (my sis faced that problem while joining the Army, boot camp's getting her over that though.) In either case, I'm a bit chubby but that can be fixed easily.

Basically what I'm asking is that Marines and Navy people here please present your own experiences in said branches so I can make an informed decision please. I'm getting tired of being caught in limbo between the two and it'd be preferable if I could talk to a recruiter in time to maybe go to boot camp this summer.

Why don't you just go talk to the marines recruiters, then go talk to the navy recruiters? From my experience with recruiters they'd love to sit around and talk to you and try to get you to join their branch..

I'd like to get as much info as possible before I have my dad take me around to recruiters because he's an ex-marine and I don't want to get his hopes totally up for me following his footsteps before I show a particular preference.

Because recruiters are full of shit, that's why you don't talk to them. If you don't believe me, I know an undes. airmen you can talk to about how honest recruiters are.

If you're down to Marines vs. Navy, you can rest assured you'll be joining the navy no matter what you choose, seeing as how the marines are part of the navy.

The question is what you want to do after the service. If you want any kind of tech job, or a job that requires any kind of serious training, go with the blue and gold (Hoo Yah). If you want to be a cop, go with the jar heads. If you want to stay in forever, the marines pay pretty well, especially once you get to E6 and up, but the navy promotes faster.

'Course, you could split the difference, join the navy as an HM, go to FMF school and be a combat doc., best of both worlds.

Gah, thanks for calling that, I meant to say the main part of the navy >_> holidays eat my brains! I also forgot to say that I am planning on staying in whichever I choose at least until eligible for retirement.

In that case, look at all the jobs each has to offer, and think about what you want to do for the next 20 years. If that fails, pick the uniform you like the best.

What I really want to do is to help rebuild communities for the less fortunate and protect those who need it. From what I've gathered from you and everyone else I've talked to, Marines may be my best bet.

I like the way the opening post was worded, and how well you thought all of this through.

Basically, you're going to have a spirit of comradity in both services, as both have a strong sense of it. More than either the Army or the Air Force do.

Why not Marine Corp Intelligence? As a Marine, you're always a rifleman, and get to use your brains.

Thats just my suggestion. Keep us posted on which service you joined and which job you requested/selected (requested or selected is based on which service you choose to join)

I wasn't raised to make decisions lightly. I'm also not sure how limited my options are as I'm not sure how much each branch limits women.

Don't worry, that feeling goes away after awhile.

Recruiters are paid liars. Assume that they'll tell you anything you want to hear to get you to join. Get everything in writing. I didn't get fucked by a recruiter, but then again, I was dead set on infantry, so all the guy had to do was get the papers in order.

0211. Marine counterintelligence. Open to women. As good as a suggestion as any. We might cross paths.
