View Full Version : Simple question about periods
how common is an erratic cycle (one that comes at the beginning of a month for one month.. then the next month, not til the end) or a cycle that's basically not always 4 weeks apart?
I always use a condom. my girlfriend has erratic periods... but she's about a week late and I'm starting to freak out. she hasn't gotten morning sickness/swollen breasts/spotting.. but still. There were no malfunctions with the condom and I pulled out as well, so I'm pretty certain I'm safe.. but I'm always worried.
I don't htink I'll say anything until she gets it, but once she gets her period I'm gonna explain that I refuse to have sex with her until she gets herself on birth control.
Should I be in fear? Are these erratic cycles fairly common in women?
Thanks.

The word you're looking for is irregular, not erratic, and irregular periods are very common, especially in girls under 25 whose bodies are still experiencing hormonal changes and settling into a rhythm. Like MartialShot said, things like stress, diet, and even exercise, can cause changes in her cycle. If you're pulling out and using a condom, you should be fine. But she really should be on birth control, especially because once she's on it her period should be extremely regular and you'll know what to expect.

They are used to end a sentence.
When quoting someone, the period should be placed before the quotation marks, eg:
"Im glad I dont have a festering, stinking, meat-hole between my legs."

How old is she? As was said before, when you're younger, they're all over the place. Also, don't stress about it. Don't casually ask her if she's got her period yet or anything. Stressing about it makes it go bye bye and sometimes you can also get other symptoms of pregnancy psychosomaticly and you're off hand comment is more so to her.
Just reinforcing that as I was late by a week (no condom at the time, stupid I know), told my bf I was a week late, he kept asking about it, I was freaked and as such, no period, bloated like hell, was ill and all that fun, even though all 8 tests were negative.
The female mind does horrible things to us as well as guys.

Don't live in fear. My periods have always been erratic so I wouldn't sweat it. If you are this worried, I would suggest maybe getting her on the pill?
yep its common...im 21 and ever since I was 14 I have been all over the place with mine..It went MIA for 15 months (although I was going through an anorexic stage)..which would cause that..but even after that it comes when it wants..4 weeks here 10 weeks there, 4 months , its like a nice suprise..Id say you have nothing to worry about..shit happens as someone mentioned younger girls generally experience this more so than your older women.
Hmm... today is the 8th day... I'm praying.

Just get a pregnancy test...
Stop worrying. As long as you used protection and nothing went wrong, you should be okay. It is very common for periods to be all over the place. I know more people with irregular cycles than those with regular cycles. Before taking bc pills, I'd get mine anywhere from once a month to once every 6-8 months. So don't worry. 8 days is nothing. Even for people with regular cycles, once in a while they will be a bit off because of stress, food, exercise, dieting, environmental factors, etc. If you're really worried, I suggest this:
Go out and buy a pack of pregnancy tests-I think they usually come two to a box. Tell your girlfriend to take the first test now, and one again just in case after a few days. If all comes out negative, you're good to go. However, since you wore a condom AND pulled out, and it didn't break, I think you're just overthinking this and you'll be fine.
BTW-Google.

It would be more accurate to ask how common it is for, especially younger, women to have regular periods.
Fairly uncommon IME...and even if they are regular they can be thrown out of sync by almost anything. Worrying about a possible pregnancy is almost a sure fire way for her to make herself late.

make her take a pregnancy test like NOW. the results should be accurate and at least your mind can be at ease (or the total opposite.) i got pregnant after i stopped taking the pill and started using condoms... abortions are no fun. seriously, she needs to be on birth control.

Don't worry yourself so much! But don't sweep it under the rug. I got my period for the first time at a very young age, a month before my 10th birthday. And since then they have been crazy, coming and going whenever. If she has had irregular periods before all of this, it shouldn't be too heavy on your mind.
In other thoughts...worry a little. I'm 5 months pregnant now, and when he was conceived I waited 6 weeks before taking a test, and I was 5 weeks along. The reason I waited so long was obvious ^^ (irregular) but my breasts started getting sore before they swelled. Look for that as one of the first signs, and then frequent pissing, and then appetite change...so on. These symptons can occur very VERY differently with most younger girls. For example, I didn't have morning sickness until this thanksgiving, in my 4th month. And a couple girls I know experienced it in their first and second months. So don't go by symptoms..but watch her.
Don't fret much..if she isn't knocked up you'll just laugh about this later. But if she is...you can always kill yourself, or be a man. Take my advice, be a man!!

I'm 20 and mine still isn't regular. I've found that I usually don't get it all summer, then get it about once a month during the fall and spring, and about every other month during the winter.
Tell your girlfriend to try to keep track of when she gets it. It will save a lot of worrying.
Mine come and go as they please. My cycle is usually anything between 15 and 46 days (irregular you may think) but that's not too bad, sometimes I don't have one for a few months. Sometimes in the past mine have stopped for nearly a year (and no, I wasn't pregnant at all during that time)
Do not force her to go on birth control. It is not nice. Do you know how the birth control pill works? It fools a woman's body into thinking she is already pregnant. You have no idea what kind of headfuck that is. And to whoever said that when she came off the pill and started using condoms she got pregnant, that is sad and unfortunate, but one of my best friends has a 3 year old son, who was conceived when she was taking the birth control pill and had been for 2 years. So no method is foolproof.

Ok...
If you have a irregular period how the fuck do you prepare for it or do you just lose a pair of undies every so often?

They wear daily pads, for things you don't want to know about, plus they can feel it. I guess when they're around a month apart they start carrying pads/tampons?

Not really. My boobs get sore and I get cramps. That's how I know that I have anywhere from 0-48 hours to get tampons.

Ah yeah, my girl gets that too. Except the cramps.
The more you know...

No... I always carry pads/tampons just to be on the safe side. I don't wear daily pads for things people don't want to know about. And yes you can feel it. In my case, 2 or 3 days before I come on I get hungry, that is the only time I get hungry (I'm not a fan of eating really) so I always know it's on it's way. And the day before my period I get pains in my kidneys.
