Planes seem to stop in mid air because they are coming right at you. When the "accelerate" it's because they turn, and then there is a relative motion. That is what you see. I saw one time in Chicago 2 lights (airliners) that I swore was a single plane directly aimed at me. I almost took evasive action to avoid it. Turns out they were about 50 miles away.
