What are some last minute tips. I know I can drive, except I need to take it in my moms GMC Acadia. Ive been driving it for a few months now, its just annoying that I cant take it in my dads mercedes or impala. I have my K-turns, lane changing (always check the blind spot and signal), pulling out of a spot (signal, blind spot and mirrors) and my parallel parks are pretty good, its just really hard to judge. It has a back up camera, but Im pretty sure that I cant use that on the test.

But what are some last minute tips. Im confident in my driving skills, i think I might just be a little bit nervous.

Don't sweat it too much. It's gonna be a lot easier than you think it will, and you'll more than likely do fine. I see that an acadia is an suv/crossover type thing. Heh, too bad. I took mine in a little tiny Ford Escort. We don't have to do parallel parking, we have something called maneuverability where you basically do a parallel parking like maneuver through a set of cones. I guess maneuverability/parallel parking is the tricky part. Then she just had me literally drive around 2 city blocks. I was thinking "that's it??? that's what I've been practicing for??"

I don't know what the fuck a K turn is.

If you're comfortable driving that soccer mom thing then you should be fine.

Just practice a lot before taking it. You might not pass it the first time...And then the 2nd time you take it you pass, but the didn't catch that your temps were expired..then you have to renew your temps and take the written test again..then do the test a 3rd time. Thats how it happened for me.

But srsly, when I did the road test I did it in my moms BMW 530i. Its a really smooth riding car, but I got a point knocked off for braking too hard. Not my fault the cars brakes are bigger than some cars wheels... :)

It's a lot easier than you're expecting, just relax. The instructor looks more at you than the car during the test. It helps if they see you completely relaxed and looking like you are in control.

Here's a couple of points that should help you pass easily:

- Make sure you look everywhere and check your blind spots frequently, this means during lane changes, during the parallel park, 3 point turn (K turn), etc. You should be like a bobble-head during the test, seriously. Exaggerate all your looking movements. It's not enough to just look on the test, make sure the instructor sees that you are looking.

- When you back up, during the 3 point turn, turn you head and actually look out the back, and put your hand on the back of the passenger seat. Instructors use this as proper technique and not using the rear view mirror

- Use your signals. When you pull over to the right to K-Turn, when you pull alongside a car to parallel park, and anytime you turn or change direction basically.

- When you K-Turn, the instructor wants to see you look a few places, you'll pull over with your right turn signal, once you pull over and change the signal to the left, check your rear view, then check your blind spot, and do the first part of the turn, look both ways and reverse while turning your head to look out the back, put it in drive, look in the way you are about to start driving, and then look the way you were going before you initiated the K-turn, drive away.

- Remember when you do the reverse part of the K-turn, you don't have to reverse all the way back to the other side of the street, only enough that you can clear the street and obstacles when you put it back in drive.

- Turn your phone off. It pisses off the instructors immensely when they hear your phone ring.

- Turn the radio/cd player off. It pisses the instructors off. You have to understand that instructors are dealing with lunatics that have no idea how to drive all day and are pissed off as it is, don't do anything to further anger them.

- Make sure the Acadia has a valid registration and the inspection isn't expired. Also make sure your mom's license isn't restricted or expired. Don't forget your permit and 5 hour certificate. If you have any flaws or anything in the car like a crack in the windshield, they might not let you take the test (This is for a big crack though.)

- A particularly useful tip for an SUV or any car for that matter, is to tilt your passenger side mirror down, so you can see the sidewalk/edge of road. Now you can see just how far you are from the sidewalk during the parallel park. The instructors can't say anything about this to you. Use this advantage.

Good luck and relax. You'll pass easy.

BTW what part of NY are you in? Long Island?

So i failed. I was kinda nervous, and the soccer mom truck is a pain in the ass. I was looking but he said I didnt look enough. I pretty much nailed the k turn (3 point turn) except he had to be a duesch, im just gonna take it again and hope to god that my dad lets me take it in his s430 mercedes. I really dont understand why he would make me take the roadtest in a car I can barely see out of.

And while i was parallel parking I did use that, the mirror actually automatically tilts down, and I used that while I was practicing, he said that since I was looking in that mirror, I failed to look out the back window which is about 10 feet away Id say, I could barely see out of it. But what ever I care, but ill live, im just gonna take it again.

And yea in long island, nassau county. You in NY to?

I don't know why daddy didn't just rent you a little civic or focus or something for the day. Then after you passed, you and your friends could've all went out to the mall to buy milkshakes and sunglasses with the car.

This is why everybody takes their test in a Ford Fiesta. Corollas are way too big!

The test in the UK is insanely difficult and meticulous. It's even worse in Ireland, so I've heard.

So if I were to visit England, my penis would be ginormous as opposed to being merely massive?

^ you've never been to Europe then

Seriously though, I've got a 1989 4-door liftback (not hatchback) Corolla, and it's fine. I'm 6 foot tall and there's loads of room for me. The rear has a split bench, rather than seats which squeeze you into the middle of the car like most modern saloons, so you can fit three people in the back. The boot is big enough for two big suitcases and a few smaller bags. The seats fold down too, I squeezed two racing bikes and a BMX in mine.

Yeah, if you're a rugby player and you take your four rugby player mates with you everywhere, or if you want to take your family on a cycling holiday, it's too small.

But as a family car, i.e. two parents and two kids and their luggage, it's absolutely perfect.

2009-01-01, 13:40
What are your thoughts on say an IS250 then?

frinkmakesyouthink
2009-01-01, 13:49
Well my stepdad has an IS220D

And the front seats are fine. He's 6'4" and no problems.

The rear seats are... naff... they're cramped and you can't see shit out the window. Because they're so contoured, the outside seats push you into the middle, and there's a big transmission tunnel where the middle person wants to put their feet. You really can't fit three people in there.

And they don't fold down, so he can't fit anything in the back and has to borrow my car all the time. Plus his alloys are corroding and the car is less than two years old (Lexus are replacing the whole set complete with good make tyres too, though)

So as a family car, it's not great. RWD doesn't really lend itself to cube efficiency, the Lexus is quite a bit longer and wider than my Toyota but the interior space, especially in the back, isn't anywhere near as good.

Good, because my mother has one and I can't sit upright in it...

And its slow.

The toys are cute though.

I'd rather have an RX, though I'd even more rather just have a decent Falcon.

An XD-XF with 351cleveland, how can you say no?* Only rapists drive V8 Falcons. Are you rapist enough?

To be honest, I'd prefer a V8 Falcon, maybe an FPV GT to the turbo'd model.

I don't care if its marginally inferior, I want a stonking great V8 and I don't care for holdens.

I don't like what they've done to the rear doors on the FGs. Much prefer BFs.

And for some reason there are a fuckload of stone chips on the front of the XR6, this annoys me because I've seen them and find them unsightly.

frinkmakesyouthink
2009-01-01, 14:28
I think they'll both do 0-60 in about 8.5 seconds, which isn't slow at all, but it's not a rocket ship. Get an is350 if you like, but if you're into speed you could get a BMW 330i or 335i

Come to think of it, the IS isn't that fast, it's not great at lugging a family around, it handles well but not excellently, it looks good but is slightly boring... what is it good at?

I know I certainly wouldn't buy one. If I had to buy a new family car (please note that I never would), I'd go for a new Mondeo or an Alfa 159... probably the Alfa, just because I can look smug knowing that I have the best looking saloon currently on sale (Jaguar XF excepted, but only because of that rear end... now if you combined the two... ) despite its relatively low price.

I don't like mondeos, nor do I like that our Falcons have taken styling cues from them.

I think my dream aston martin has been replaced by an entirely black DBS.

I mean ENTIRELY, the only non black bit of the interior will be the gear lever.

It will be pure evil looking. Utterly menacing. Fit to crash into the sun.

Pft.

Old DBS > new DBS

http://geektechnique.org/images/195.jpg

The new DBS looks like riced DB9. Gimmie a DB9 over any new DBS, I don't care about the extra performance.

Same thought on my end. I have a 91 Camry and there is plenty of space in there, as well as the trunk being quite large. Plus the gen2 camrys are classified as a compact. I don't know how this misconception started that these trophy wives need an Excursion to lug around an only child, a soccer ball, and some grocery and macy's bags..

If you can barely see out of it, you shouldnt be driving it.

Im in the UK, passed the road part of car test 1st time. In a 1.3 Diesel Corsa.

over here in sydney, the P's are shithard apparently.

most of the friends i know failed and got them 2nd or 3rd time.
only like 3 got them first go.

they mostly failed by:

stopping at stop signs (slowed down almost to a stop, but didnt actually stop)
went over the line
speeding in school zones (40km/h) on certain hours of the day to allow for school traffic/pedestrians to cross safely
failing to check blind spots

act like a complete pussy,
look over your shoulder heaps, monitor the road, and the dashboard, scan the road (make it look like your doing it to).

Marginally? The V8 Falcons are pointless. And they only just sell - and that's only because people like you won't go for the rival company's offerings.. ..which are absolute light years ahead of anything with 8 cylinders Ford is offering. The list is just enormous, and it's not just the engine but the rest of the car that can't come close to competing with Holden. I'm not even exagerrating here mate, it's all been written in stone.

There is one thing I really love about the V8 Falcons though, and that's their exhaust note. It's fucking marvelous. The inline six and turbo inline six Falcons are the shit though, and they help reverse the tables a little bit when you go in comparing 6 cylinder models against each other. Still not up to scratch n chassis dynamics and handling, but leads the class with most the other things. There are a few things that the Alloytec does better than the Barra, but on the other thand there are few things that the Alloytec does better than the Barra.
