View Full Version : Drugs and Spiritual Growth
Fellow totseans, I propose a question and a statement. Do you believe certain psychedelic drugs (LSD, Cannabis, Mescaline...etc) hinder or catalyze spiritual growth? Perhaps both?
I understand this is a similar thread to the marijuana is spiritual thread but I would like to hear your specific opinions on this.
My opinion is this: Drugs are a tool for us to use. I believe that the way we use them are completely based on our intention, and state of mind. Let me use this metaphor. Think of the drug as a hammer.
Now, you can do multiple things with a hammer, for instance, fix a floorboard, or smash someones skull to pieces. Depending on what you intend to do and act on determine the outcome. You could have either made your floor sturdier, or destroyed someones life.
Drugs could be used the same way. If you take something to get "fucked up" that is what is going to happen. If you use it to help widen your conscious, then that is what will happen.
Do you agree/disagree with me? And what is your own personal opinion?

I don't know using drugs, but the only one I would use for "spiritual growth" would be DMT, you already have it. ;)
But in other words, I'd rather be "myself" not affected by anything "brain altering." The only thing I want altering my brain is myself, changing from Beta to alpha to delta waves for meditative purposes. But that's just my opinion, espcially considering I've never done any drugs beyond my asthma and allergy medicine and advil.
I would agree with the OP. I think a better analogy is a radio though. Your brain can pick up one station normally but with the addition of certain chemical compounds it turns into a digital radio capable of picking up hundreds of stations.
Personally I don't see anything wrong with adding chemicals to your brain - it already is just a sequence of chemical / electrical charges etc. so what's wrong with adding a different chemical to the mix.
I also think hallucinogenic mushrooms / plants were a catalyst to human consciousness.

I don't necessarily have a problem with drugs, just as you said , I'd rather keep this "frequency." But that's me. ;)
i think it is a totally individual experience. Some people are "high on Jesus" and dance, fall down and talk in tongues without any help...and others may only have revelations when stimulated. For myself, stimulants enhance my senses and I often have hallucinations, but it doesn't make me any more a spiritual person.

I would agree with the OP.
Most "drugs" have their own properties that can induce growth. Weed relaxes you, centers you, ecstacy makes you feel an abundance of love, psychedelics open your mind to strange and interesting ideas and perspectives.
I say do what you want, that's why we're here.

Do what thou wilt
I see drugs as "Consciousness Amplifiers"

I definately think it does speed it up, but if you use too much it'll burn you out.
If you aint ready for a realisation and you get it anyway, it can fuck you and turn you into a nervous wreck.

In my experience--which is considerable, having gotten loaded for the first time on New Years Eve of 1953, and having gone to college during the excesses of the sixties--drugs give you nothing you don't already have, and often take away what you do have.
That said, some drugs do have their uses in ritual and sacrament--which can easily turn to idolatry.

Drugs are power
If you don't know how to handle power, the powers will turn against you and rape your soul.

Drugs are fun.
You "spiritual growth" types are never any fun to trip with, at all.

i agree with what your saying but that is a simile not a metaphor just to let you know. a metaphor is a comparison that doesn't use like or as. a simile is the opposite.
