Woah this band is awsome, I always new of them but never gave them a chance until recently. The first four soungs on "the aroeplane over the sea". Jeff Magnum is a genious.:)
I don't really understand what the big deal over neutral milk hotel is. Sounds pretty average to me.

But have you actually tried listening to them? with feelin? It's the kind of music that makes smoking dope with your childhood love on the beach a complete experience

Jeff Magnum is not a member of Neutral Milk Hotel. They are good, albeit irrelevant.

yeah, they are pretty awsome. That album has gotten perfect 10s in a lot of places.
and Jeff Mangum is a member of neutral milk hotel????
i don't know where you got he isn't. Unless you're just pointing out how the OP mispelled it.
NMH is a bit overrated in my opinion. Jeff's voice is very irritating after a while, and "genius" is a bit of a stretch.
I can't stand anything from them other than in the aeroplane over the sea, which is weird, because I think that album is near perfect.

Its Jeff Mangum. And yes he was.
Aeroplane...... is one of the best albums ever made IMO.

No shit, I'm pointing out a misspelling, its a very common misspelling/pronunciation, he talked about it on a radio show. Also, I've met Jeff.

Well, you tell him that dagnabitt from Totse thinks he's nifty.
In The Aeroplane Over The Sea is a pretty fucking brilliant album. I have found their other work to be quite hard to get into though.

I downloaded The Aeroplane Over the Sea after reading this thread.
Holy shit, this is TERRIBLE.
The music is -okay-, but the nonsense lyrics trying too hard to come off as "deep" and "meaningful" are just fucking stupid and this guy's voice is worse than nails on a chalkboard.
I only really like two songs from NMH. Those would be Oh Comely and Two Headed Boy. I suppose for those two songs you can look beyond the god awful singing.
I don't dislike them, but it just depends on the mood (then again most music is like that). But its just true, there is no singing talent and the lyrics make no sense. Say that they are deep and meaningful if you will. But it's just like poetry or any other literature. If you look deep enough then you'll find something, however this something is rarely what the author/composer was trying to convey

Okay, I'll admit that I like Two Headed Boy.

I've only heard "Aeroplane over the sea", which is awesome.
And "King of carrot flowers", which I'm not keen on.

The lyrics on the album "In the Aeroplane Over the Sea" make plenty of sense. Though I don't pretend to understand everything the man is trying to say, I would think you'd have to be pretty daft to not get a lot of the imagery and feelings and motifs that he is putting accross.
He's singing about pretty universal stuff... love, loss, sex, dysfunctional families and relationships, hopes and dreams. Then there's the more specific bits of reference to Anne Frank and whatnot.
I'm sorry the dude felt like writing beautifully uncomfortable lines about sexuality and it's repression and discovery in a slightly abstract way; rather than literally saying "sex and being young and discovering yourself is awkward and hard and uncomfortable and beautiful."
I don't look down on you for "not getting it", but I think you're going to miss out on a fair bit of beautiful lyricism if you continually write off anything that comes off the slightest bit abstract.
And how is "Holland 1945" not like everyone's favorite song on that album?

"Can't believe how strange it is to be anything at all" - In the Aeroplane Over the Sea.

That is one of the best songs on the album, but the fuzzy bass puts a lot of people off I find.

Judging from what I've seen, they're either absolutely mind blowing or complete shit.

Yea put me down in the 'complete shit' category. I heard so much about this band and how fucking beyond awesome they are. Then I downloaded an album and it was just so fucking awful I couldn't stand it. I don't know what it takes for someone to think this band it great, I really don't, because in all honesty everything about what I listened to was complete shit.

Blame the fucking indie fags.
They'll embrace anything that no one has heard of/gives a shit about and hype it until people think it's actually good, which it isn't.
This is why 95 percent of indie music is total garbage. Bitch, if you were that good you'd get a real record deal.
