How long were you smoking for?
A bad cough and coughing up blood can literally be over 20 causes. Here are a few popular:
Blood clot in the lung
Cancer
Vasculitis (Inflammation of the blood vessels in the lung)
Pneumonia
In any case, see a doctor as soon as humanly possible in the event that it is sinister, time is critical.

No just means you have weak lungs. Slow down on smoking or stop smoking all together. Remember if you smoke getting sick or bad coughs are twice as more likely. Instead of start to finish getting over a cold of 5-6 days its now 12-14 for me.
Coughing up anything but air is generally not good, getcho ass to the doctor.

I've been smoking around a pack a day for the last 17 years, and I don't cough up blood, so as xxombs said, get your ass to the doctor.
Personally I doubt it's cancer, but something clearly isn't as it's supposed to be.
