Uh. Am I the only one who noticed a big fat hairy loophole here?

Observe someone buying expensive item X at your local Wal Mart, write down the date and time. A day or two later, go ask them for a "replacement" receipt for the item. Go to a different Wal Mart (or even the same one, for all you care) and grab item X off the shelf, then "return" it with the receipt. Pocket cash and go home richer.

Yeah...duh. Day one: browse through the garbage outside of a major retailer's parking lot and find some receipts for expensive and small things. Vitamins are a good score, especially at pharmacies. If questioned, say you bought something and accidentally threw your receipt away. Day two: Return to the store with the receipt, get the item off the shelf, and "return" it. Pocket the $$$.

Won't Wal Mart security notice you going up to customer service with something you just grabbed off the shelf?

better yet, Won't alot of items come up as "non active" once they do a rescan? I have no proof for this, just suspension.

In my area there was always a $ limit on what you could return, and you needed ID and could only do so many a year.

The line about going back to your original wal-mart to get a receipt printed is total BS. they would not do this unless you made a total scene and acted like a loud, obnoxious idiot.

They also have told me a million times to make a photocopy of my receipt when I make an expensive purchase. This is totally useless and does not help one bit even if you get a manager when trying to return. I have also seen a couple other people denied while trying this as well.

Bullshit for thieves, good for the store saving money. Kind of lame since I burn, rip up and throw away my receipts the minute they enter my hand.

Ok two things:

like someone said above would an item you grab in the store come up as inactive when you return "your" item... And are all bar codes on a certain product the same?

and second, instead of bullshitting w/ a no receipt lie wouldn't it be easier to just buy an item and come back with the actual receipt and get your money back by returning one of their items? and then maybe come back even later w/ a photocopied receipt and do the same thing and get double the money?? Or do they put in the PC that you already returned a certain item on a certain receipt?

all the barcodes for one specific item are identical

every receipt has a specific transaction ID number and cannot be returned more than once even if you keep the receipt and they do not draw a line through it.

But taking another item off the shelf and returning it works great as long as there is no serial number on the receipt.

Unless you're buying something that needs to be activated;

1)Pre-paid Phone Cards
2)Gift Cards
3)etc.

Then the only thing the bar code serves is to keep inventory.

I've worked in a couple of retail shops and that's how it was done. When they can the bar code it simply says "There is xx amount of items in stock". When you purchase an item it subtracts 1 from the total number... and when you return an item it adds 1 to the total number.

Also keep in mind that you need to find a receipt that was paid in cash and does not have a name on it.
