View Full Version : Foods you eat when you're sick

Recently there's been a stomach bug going around and I've been almost living off of a mixture of 1 part water, 1 part ginger ale, and 2 parts gatorade (or any other sports drink kind of thing). I just add the water because I think gatorade is too sweet.

Also, a great comfort food in general that I like is a bean soup. Just saute any vegetables you have (I like onions, celery, and cabbage) you have, add 2 cans of chicken broth and a can of beans (of any kind), and simmer for a while.

What foods do you cook/eat when you're not feeling well?

Some nice hot ramen, made however you like. ^^

I personally like to eat normal foods.

I hate eating soup when I'm sick,

because I feel shitty and I'm hungry. I want FOOD not liquids.

I feel sorry for my family because I get pissy when they try to push chicken noodle soup on me and I'm like, "fuck you! I WANT RIBS!."

I tend to go for nutrient dense food. So the juicer/blender comes out usually. Veggies and fruit, protien poweder, whole milk, ice cubes etc.

It doesn't always taste great but it does the job when I can't stomach solid food.

Making your own soup is a good way to get the nutrients-heavy chow that Joe was talking about. It's also a good way to give yourself a small task that can be handled even whilst sick.

I'm a fan of the old chicken soup stuff...but I prefer dark meat (har har!), lightly dredged in flour, and browned before adding veggies for a quick sweat and then broth. A basic mirepoix and copious amounts of garlic and ginger (an anti-inflammatory) are helpful as well.

Hope ya avoid the bug and feel better.

Hot whiskey with cloves.

Also, plenty of soup. Let it be beef with vegetables, Hot and sour, or Tortilla soup.

What soups would you suggest for a vegetarian?

When I'm sick my mom always makes me sort of rice gruel thing. It's basically just white rice made with a bit more water than normal, and then you can drizzle it with soy sauce and furikake (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Furikake) and eat it with a spoon.

Pretty much the same as I said above, just use vegetable broth instead of chicken. Just throw together any vegetables you have, making sure to add them in the right order. Harder vegetables like carrots go first, where thinner, softer ones like cabbage are last. I really like adding canned beans just because they're cheap, filling, and easy to throw back up. :)

Congee. Your mom wouldn't be part asian, would she?

You don't have to make it plain; anything you would make soup with you can use to make congee.

My mom's not but my dad is half Japanese, so my mom probably learned it from his mom. I love it, it's one of the best sick foods in my opinion.

Buttered toast and black tea.

Good for a bit of a stomach calmer.

I eat everything I would normally. That being said though, I've only been sick one time where I couldn't stomach anything so I just didn't eat at all.

i had a friend who brought that stuff to school a lot. it was actually pretty good if you could get past the smell (those chinese black preserved eggs?). with ginger, white pepper and sesame oil, it would be pretty good i reckon. though i dont understand why it would be such a good sick food. its pretty high GI and has little protein, fibre, and nutrients

when im sick i usually eat normally. though my mom makes french onion soup or ministrone

It's warm and easy to eat. The ginger helps settle the stomach. It's not really curative, but it makes you feel better.

The preserved eggs are an aquired taste...

acquired my ass, i've been eating that shit since forever, and always loved it. i had some today (kuz my gf got it at a restaurant, i usually dont eat it for months or maybe once or twice a year.)

As for the Op's question:

drinks that provide electrolytes such as gatorade or powerade. 7 up, ginger ale. chicken noodle soup or clam chowder (i dont know if it helps, but i like it)

Damn, I spent half my winter holiday in bed violently vomiting most solids I ate.

During that time, I subsisted on mostly chicken & tomato soup, ginger tea with lemon, Gatorade, and lightly salted crackers. That virus was absolutely horrendous. :(

So have I, to be honest. But then I'm asian; a food I would find "gross" does not exist. Just saying that there's a stigma surrounding a lot of our foods. Most people wouldn't even give it a chance.

thats true. i've heard they had it on an episode of fear factor, along with other asian delicacies such as chicken feet. however, i would have to disagree when you say there are no gross foods, there are some cultures where things are eaten that seem inedible to me, however it may just be a matter of perception.
