This little sentence has been part of Totse's FAQ for as long as I've been aware of the site, and quite probably much longer. Most people are not nice to each other on here though, and infidelguy's thread (http://www.totse.com/community/showthread.php?t=2186178) brought forth the idea that Totse is going downhill (a matter of opinion) because of excess hostility on the part of many members. I propose that for one week, starting from today, anybody willing to participate post in this thread and confirm that you're going to be nice to others, and for that week refrain from saying anything needlessly hurtful, spiteful, malicious or cruel to any other user, regardless of what they say to you

so who's willing to join me in a one-week campaign for niceness?

While true, it has always been like this although less as much since I have been visiting the site for the past 8 years and posting for the last 6. There has always been the hostility but was mostly confined to BLTC that forum just kind of spread out all over if you ask me. SG always had spam issues and those have since gone away but the assholes have let themselves out the closet in retaliation.

Well, i try my level best to be nice to everyone and in return Totse has always been nice to me in it's own way. You just need to man up and enjoy the show. Totse shows love in different ways then most sites. Love it, embrace it, THIS IS TOTSE!

and for the most part i believe we should show more tolerance and respect, unless of course the person is a complete idiot and deserves to be harassed in the way totse does best.

yes, excess hostility is a problem but the problem really lies in the fact that nobody really uses totse for whats its really for (see thread) and that totse used to be a place where people from all sorts of strange interests (normals ones too, from Printed Matter, Vogon Poetry) all these interesting people would congregrate in SG and we were an eclectic group of poets, drug addicts, chemists, script kiddies, you name it all sorts of fun folk.

*again this is my opinion, im sure totse is a wonder land for some of you .

To be honest, I've been sticking to my own turf (DIY, BB, StS, and others) and avoiding SG, mostly because it's become a gathering place of internet junkies. Not a common ground for "poets, drug addicts, chemists, and script kiddies" like it used to be. You can't entirely blame one place, but 4chan holds a lot of the blame. If you visit 4chan, you should probably just stay at that website. Totse is fundamentally different. Although some of you newbies may not realize it, SG is NOT the core of the website. SG is a pitiful footnote.

You think all of the great achievements of totseans happen in SG? We've got people building their own cars, soldering together their own computers, drawing up plans for hovercrafts, mastering obscenely difficult organic syntheses, writing novels, painting murals, hacking government mainframes, and dodging a felony conviction by clever use of the bill of rights. For the inhabitants of that rarefied air, SG is something of a water cooler, a lounge. It's a break room for when we need to laugh, tell a story, or blow off some steam. We'll wander on over to HB if we're feeling abnormally silly.

So, the best thing you can do to make totse a better place is in the upper-left hand corner at https://www.totse.com . See that turquoise banner? "Read*Know*Do" That's all you've got to do. It'll improve our life as a community, and your life as a citizen of Planet Earth. Enough of this pretend racism and recycled image macros from ED. Do something original, learn something unconventional. Break a few rules, but don't get caught. Make some bad decisions, but learn from them. Browse through some of the text files from the 90s. It's what we're famous for. There was a time when totse was the internet's premier text file archive. A library of forbidden knowledge. Of course...take it with all grain of salt. Freedom of speech includes freedom to lie.

yes, this is exactly my point. everyone used who used to frequent the other forums SG was like a congregration of the users of all the other forums. but anyways i think someone else brought up the point how all these new douchebag fags think the point of totse is to be as rude and insulting as possible while at the same time coming off as a slick jivin cool cat.

it is an experiment to see how drastically the forums would change if nobody was unnecessarily hostile

*pity sign-up*?

Anyway, I believe that I am reasonably nice (though some people might disagree, heh); however it wouldn't hurt to go through one week consciously reminding myself to be nicer to others, or at the very least not go out of my way to hurt others.

That being said I will still keep on swearing and using racial slurs (if the situation calls for it). Can't live without them.

If you read that thread properly, you would have discovered everybody being nice to each other was far from the point of that thread.

It has people have stopped trying to contribute and are lacking substance. These people are filling threads with pointless, counter-productive one-liners in threads. The general consensus among the people have gone from being interesting and contribute, to trying to be funny. Usually the only person find what they have to say actually funny, is themselves.

I don't think a new member should be trying to restore totse heritage, when he doesn't even know what he is trying to restore to. We have never really been nice to each other.

Bum Wax
2009-01-03, 14:43
From looking at the old threads from SG my view is that many people were always just trying to be funny

however those old threads usually stayed on-topic whereas it is common now for threads to be diverted far off-topic by flame wars and posters with personal vendettas

Looking doesn't do much it justice, you could be looking in a sour era. You had to participate to really experience it. Just like watching someone smoke weed doesn't do a great deal for the one watching.

Ok, it sounds like you've got it together. I'll join your cause.

Perhaps we should start listing members who are counter-productive to the community and our cause. We then should effectively gauge their response, failing that, they will become an "ignore list". In your OP, we could provide the username of the counter-productive totsean and their "ignore link" next to their name to ignore all their posts.

Glad to have you on board, although it is my opinion that the ignore function is contrary to Totse's policy of complete free speech

my personal approach would be to not respond to hostile or derailing posters until they change their actions although of course you may compile such a list yourself if you wish

You could very well be right.

Although I must say the "ignore" function is a god-send to* those of us who are of less "fortitude" than you are.
For example, this cunt of a poster known as moonmeister is on my ignore. Normally I just scroll through posters
that tend to post nothing of significance but this guy's bullshit was of a very peculiar kind, the kind that you
just couldn't look away from.

Everytime I saw his posts, or god forbid, interacted with him, my blood pressure just went through the roof. He
said the most weird, fucked up, nonsensical shit like you wouldn't believe. I honestly think this guy is
slightly crazy (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neologism#Other_uses)

It's always best to be mindful of other Totseans and be nice. Often, it's very difficult to recognize just how much our jaded dispositions and needlessly saucy attitudes can have an affect on the people we've come to know and love in our happy home here.

A case in point would be irresponsible activist, who, after a very undramatic suicide speech, went and hung himself quiety and without any real fuss. If persons here have been nicer to him, maybe been more friendly, he might have still been alive to this very day - to share our happiness and sorrows. Just goes to show you how simple words on a computer screen can indeed kill a person in their heart.

** R.I.p. irresponsible activist .. we will miss you dearly. You are with the angels now.
