Wow, is there anything good about this band at all? Do I just not get it or something?

If you don't like octavarium, you probably don't like the band. It's OK, I don't like them much anymore either.

It's cool if you're a guitar player.

Which I'm not, so it sucks ass.

"TRAPPED INSIDE this OCTAVARIUM!"

Portnoy's got some bonafide beats.

A Change of Seasons is good. Personally I'm not a super fan of this band but, they are still good

Protip: If you don't like Dream Theatre, you'll HATE Liquid Tension Experiment.

I know I do.

Give some of their older stuff a try.

I'm still a big fan, but everything after 6 Degrees of Inner Turbulence has been really different.

Way too heavy, almost stereotypically metal. Sometimes feels like they're trying to be Metallica.

I still like their music, but only because I can hear and feel the faint reminders of their old music in their new stuff.

scenes from a memory is a more accessible album. i find their musicianship and composition to be amazing. i dont like a lot of their songs but some of them have segments of amazingly composed instrumental sections.

I was recommended "Trains of Thought" by a friend and I thought it was a pretty good album, so as most people would do, I looked at their album and was bored to hell. My friends who did listen to the bands told me that it had to 'grow' on me. I never got around to listening to their other shit. I like the Change of Seasons song though, most of it that is.

Almost all of their older stuff is similar to Change Of Seasons. Train of Thought is sadly the first album they started being mostly butt-rocker generic metal.

Constant Motion is my favorite by them. Pull Me Under is another good one.

I'm not too crazy about them, only because the vocalist ruins most of the songs for me. And this is coming from someone who can generally appreciate 'power metal' type vocals, so that has nothing to do with it. He's just not very good at all in my opinion.

Especially on some of the live tracks I've heard. I know that no one is absolutely perfect live, but it was almost unbearable in some places.

Stream of Consciousness is a great track, though. And I can enjoy the music in a lot of their other stuff, at least.

Octavarium is a pretty shitty album (apart from the 20 minute title track, which kicks ass). They should like a watered down, cheesy, radio friendly Muse for most of it. However they got it back with Systematic Chaos which, for the most part, was pretty awesome. Although Scenes From a Memory and Images and Words are still my two favourite Dream Theatre albums.

DT are not the easiest band to like and a lot of the time you will either love them or hate them. They, slightly annoyingly, take themselves waaaaaaay too seriously and the vocals can be annoying a lot of the time. Plus the extended instrumental pieces can get tiresome sometimes. But even with these flaws I still think they are a great band with amazingly gifted musicians. Scenes From a Memory is easily in my top 10 favourite albums ever.
