if you havn't played it you're either a pussy, an idiot or...well, maybe you just havn't had the chance. nonetheless, this game is solid and you all need to play it.
I've been a big RE4 fan for a while now. now I'm thinking "RE4, my ass", and same to RE5 (Though I'm still dying for it). now Dead Space might not have the excellent shooting mechanics that RE4 had on the Wii, but oh my is it a great game. and fucking terrifying at that. ontop of that, I've been playing it in 1080 with the lights off and the volume up...eek. it tends to get to your nerves after a bit, but you just can't put it down.
this and what little I've played of Mirror's Edge have really managed to actually earn my respect to EA from once (and I'd hope from the entire gaming community...I'd really like to see some more polished games such as these, from EA.).
now I havn't beaten it yet; so no spoilers, please. but my only problem with this game; and I mean ONLY, is the small variety of enemies...but it could widen up a bit as I play more. I'm also hoping for some replay value...

Your wife has really been dead the entire time, and you're just imagining her. A zombie of her or a hallucination jump up at you in the final cutscene.
That one chick double crosses you.
The black man dies and you're forced to watch from behind glass. Then you kill the monster.
The final boss kills the double crossing chick.
You kill the final boss.
Oh and the artifact isn't even the original one, it's one that was reversed engineered and built for tests.

If you guys paid attention to the first letter of EACH chapter it spells out something. (12 letters)
Also, best sound ever.
Also, best sound ever.
Better than System Shock 2?
I would say no. It's one of the most atmospheric/scary games since SS2 but it isn't quite as good imo.

the audio in the game is what makes it scary. if u play the game on low, meh. if u play it on high vol with good speaks it makes the whole "experience" much much better.

Great game. The outer-space scenery was breathtaking, the zero-gravity sections were surprisingly fun, and the cinematic style was really well-integrated. It was somewhat scary at first (mainly because you didn't know what the fuck to expect), but after a couple of levels the horror aspect dissolved to a subtle sense of foreboding.
I hope in the sequel (they've gotta make one) they have better monsters and more weapons. The standard tan-colored creature was pretty cool, but everything else was just rather goofy-looking and usually annoying above all else. I also hope to see some more varied scenery in the next game. Perhaps half of it could be on a ship, and the other half could be in a facility on some bizarre planet.

I didn't find the games outright creepiness to begin to fade until around the 8th chapter, atleast. it held up better and much longer than any other. the atmosphere from then on was a little more lit. in turn, the battles did become alot more intense, though. stronger, faster enemies; and in much larger quanities at that.
I can't argue with Dead Space getting "Best atmosphere" and "Best Sound Design", last year. it's the best in recent years, no doubt. has anyone seen the prequel film? I about bought it today after noticing the DVD, but I couldn't find it on Bluray.

There's definitely a sequel coming:
A sequel to the game is in development as well as a possible movie release to 'bridge the gap between the two games'.[38] The alien texts decorating the walls of the Ishimura and the colony allude to Unitology and the mausoleum ships that its believers are constructing to house the bodies of the deceased faithful when translated. This has set off much speculation that the sequel may be connected to these events, especially when it is taken into consideration that Unitology is one of the game's main 'mechanics'.

I'd like the sequel to be in the mining colony.

By mining colony, do you mean the place you were in the final level? Yeah, that would be pretty awesome. They could have you on the surface of the planet for a while, and then going deep into the mines to fight all sorts of crazy alien shit.
