Hi Totse,

I have used VLC and VobSub before but what is Totse's favorite way of injecting subs into a movie. I want to actually add them to the .avi for burning to a disk later.

Which works best? I want to be able to inject only the parts of the movie that aren't english. I can find these subs, but if any of you know the best place, please, do tell.

Thanks,

RDP

camtasia studio ..
really simple.
I just taught myself this week, in like an hour, and captioned 2 videos.
One on the screen and one under the picture.

Here's a video tutorial from the company.

Let it download first for best viewing.

i use WinAVI Converter, which can be found with a simple google search, if i remember correctly. no serial needed. you click "convert to avi" (even if it's already an avi) and then under Advanced Options, go to DSHOW Decoder and then Stream Select, and just find the subs and hit OK. you can also puck the color, size, font, etc. very nice program. usually takes me about 15 minutes for a feature length movie.

If I need subtitles I wouldnt want them as part of the .avi, but as a seperate entity that I can use if I want to.
Hence all my subtitles are stored sepperatly in .sub files which most players support

Thanks for all the suggestions, I'll try them out.

One more: best app for combining split AVI's. ex: turning a CD1 and CD2 avi into one 1.4 GB one? I've done it with VobSub but there's got to be a better one.

for that i use virtualdub. open the 1st file, then go to file and 'append avi segment' and go to the 2nd file. whats also cool is if you have a lot of files, for example dog1, dog2, dog3... dog 27, if you open dog1 and then append dog2, it will also append all the rest of the files in the right order because it knows they go together based on the filenames. then you'll go into "video" (at the top) and change "full processing mode" to "direct stream copy". it'll then merge the files together without any actual compression, and only takes as long as it would take to write the file. for a full movie, this usually takes me around a minute.

one exception, though, (which is a bit of a bitch, but not that bad) sometimes cd1 and cd2 has variable audio bitrate, meaning the audio is different in each file, and you can't append files like that. so what i do is i'll open the 1st file, go to video and change full processing mode to direct stream copy, and then go to audio and change direct stream copy to full processing mode. then let that run (file, save as avi). this should take about 3 minutes. do that to both files, then do the same thing i explained above with the 2 new files with fixed audio. like i said, not that bad, but just another step taking a few minutes.

if you have 2 cd's, and you need to attach subtitles to the files and the sub files are also 2 files, add the subs first, then connect the 2 movies. it's harder to connect the 2 sub files later to add them.

hope this helps :)
