View Full Version : IF you could rename the numbers 1-10, what'd you change them to?

And why?

Let's just say us Totseans got ourselves an island and wanted to express our sovereignty with a number system ...

Personally I think the English numbers sound shit when you say one to ten - there's no pattern/rhyme or anything. Numbers are so fucking important in a language so I think they should at least sound beautiful when you say them, like a poem or something to show them respect for how much they've advanced our civilisation.

I'd personally go with:

1. Ace (like in cards. I think it sounds 100x more top-dog like than 'one', which sounds rather dull and zzzzzzzz tbh. A numerical system needs to start off with a bang to get language learners wanting to learn on, and I don't feel that 'One' is exciting enough.)
2. Deus (2 = Deuce in cardgames, but Deus means god in Latin. God has been a very influential guy in the last few thousand years so I think he deserves a place in the number system. It would be one, but it might get a little confusing for the French and Spanish and some other irrelevant countries.)
3. Trey (from cards again. Poker is VERY important, more than people think. It's been the number one driving force of the world economy for the last 1500 years so i think it should it's just right to have the first 3 numbers dedicated to it)
4. Qat (pronounced cat. cats are coolcats so they should be in the numerical system, and them crafty Arabs shouldn't be the only people to have a Q not proceeded by a U. The number 444,444,444 will officially be 'Longqat'.)
5. Song (everyone likes songs, and five sounds dull as shit.)
6. Fay (rhymes with trey, and fay is quite a nice name, reminds me of spring)
7. Slevin (lucky number slevin.)
8. Tots (paying homage to the temple)
9. Nene (fuck knows.))
10. Xen/Jhen/Gen/Jin/Gin (Xen's the final world in Half Life, so in order to commemerorate my 10th anniversary since I completed the game it gets the honour of having a number!

Now say it aloud!
Ace, Deus, Trey // Kat, Song, Fay // Slevin, Tots, Neen, Jhen! Doesn't that sound far better?

Creating a base ten number system! No way! That's too complex. We should use base two.

I c wut u did thar.

I've never really considered renaming the numbers, the only other language I can reliably count in would be german, for which the pronunciation I don't mind at all. I'd use OPs as well, it actually had quite a nice ring to it, except slevin, I'd keep that as seven.

Octets! Very cool.

Equations as counterpoint harmony.

Prime numbers - re, mi, so, ti.. not sure how to handle the 'nine ten' problem..

What's it called when people use numbers, equations or secuences in music to create ordered, mind blowing patterns?

I saw some videos once about a metal plate with apparently sand on it, and as different "numbers" were being played into it, the sonic vibrations of each different note and "number" made the sand take intricate geometric, eeriely ordered shapes.

A number scale somehow based on music would be abslutely fucking incredible.

Our current number scale isn't perfect and will limit our development in the future probably. I think the existance of prime numbers being unpredictable and irrational numbers means it's flawed. Just like how the Roman numeral system heled back Romans... In the future a new one will probably be developed.

But yeah, I think something based on music would make everything MUCH easier to work out, our brains would probably subconsciously work out problems based on musical patterns. What 'sounds' the best in your hred would probabl be the answer to the problem.

Fuck man, I need to study cognitive psychology with maths or something, I'd love to develop such a system.

The number scale is expressed in graphemical representations of distinct and audibile phonemical sounds, that is to say human speech, which could be considered music if one was so inclined to make such a claim
