So i use a linksys switch (i thought it was a router) and it used to seem to work, but now that i have att dsl i cant connect more then one computer on it.. Say if i want to get on my xbox live i have to go to my Network Connections and manually disable it.. (I use Windows xp)
So i figured that if i bought an actual router it would fix that but.. nope i got a Netgear Wireless WGR614v9 router for 45 dollars... and it still wont fucking work... is it my actual dsl modem or what? I have no clue what to do.. and all that troubleshoot bullshit from their website hasnt done jackshit... so any help would be appreciated..

You might have to adjust your settings on the modem. I think you might have PPPoE set on the computer, and you need to set it to the modem. Or the other way around... I'm not sure at the moment because it's been so long since I've had ATT DSL. I've had this problem too, so try that first.

The router should fix that. It should go like this:
>xbox
*
modem ---->router< ---> computer
*
>other computer

The above diagram should help you. If your DSL modem is performing NAT than you will need to change the LAN network on your new router to something different ex: (from 192.168.1.1 to something like 192.168.2.1). Then clone the MAC address of a computer on your network and you should be good to go.

I think the problem lies in your router itself. I had a netgear router and scrapped it because it couldn't handle xbox live for some reason. You could always install another network card in your computer, and bridge the connections. That's what I did.

Hmmm.. Damn :( and another shitty thing is i dont know how to change my Nat settings.. so when i do play xbox live i barely ever find a game because ATT is soo strict..

Just for the hell of it. Run the ethernet cable from your modem into a one of the switchports rather than the internet port and see what happens.

Hmmm good idea but it still wont let both connect.. and when i turn my xbox on it says theres an ip conflict
EDIT: but thats with the linksys switch.. not the netgear wireless router.

by the sounds of it your Modem is not performing NAT which you will need if you want to run more than 1 computer. Try and run the software that came with the router and if that dont work you wil need to do this.
*run a ethenet cable from the switchport on the router to a compuer.
*log into the router (192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1)
*default username admin. Password is password or admin
*Clone the MAC address of your PC thru the router configuration page and save settings.
*Hook up as the diagram shows above
* Power down everthing and reboot in this order Modem - router - PC

Indeed I was going to say clone MAC addy.
but I ahve to point out that the modem does not perform NAT. the router performs NAT. (OSI model- router lever 3, modem level 1)
also try opening up your routers firewall- put in in DMZ- and then try to get on Xbox live. if this works then you need to forward router ports to your Xbox.
also does the xbox work when plugged striaght into the modem? if not then its your ISP

Ill try the mac clone.. But it seems like i cant get into the router anymore.. Piece of shit.. But yeah i can connect to xbox live if i run a direct ethernet from my modem to my xbox...

you would need to get into the router to adjust those settings, so if power cycling the router doesnt work, and resetting the router doesnt work, then your current router will work well for holding down paper.
