It's not just the females who are affected by something like that. A year before my daughter was born, my wife and I decided to start a family. A couple of months after she went off the pill she got pregnant.

2 or 3 months into the pregnancy she started to spot. A few weeks later she had a miscarriage. It upset me just as much - possibly even more - than it did her.

Losing a child is probably about the worst thing that can happen to anyone. Granted I got over it a lot quicker than I would have had been a case of losing a child after they were born, but it was still one of the worst days of my life.

It's something that someone who have no children can't quite understand - there's no way you can until you do have a kid. No amount of words can convey it either. It's like trying to describe an acid trip to someone who has never tripped. Or trying to describe what sex is like to a virgin - you just can't do it.

You are ready to start a family with your life partner and are psyching yourself up for 9 months to have a baby. To have a human pop out of your vagina. All you can do is prepare and hope your baby comes out alright. All you can do is imagine and wonder the type of life it's going to have. You make heaps of plans, heaps of changes to your diet and lifestyle. You make room for another life. You give part of yourself away to look after this soon-to-be newborn. All you can do is hope it's going to be happy. You have 9 months to do this.

Then what happens? You're in the middle of giving birth and the baby dies. All your expectations, all your worries, all your nervousness, every emotion you went through while in the process of making this baby gets flushed down the toilet and is replaced with utter disappointment and tragedy. Part of you has died.
