View Full Version : DIY Speakers in Cap

I was thinking of embedding some thin small speakers onto the brim of an old cap so that I do not have to put earbuds in when I jog. They always seem to fall out and also not so good for your ears. In addition I was thinking of clipping a small MP3 player like the one on the link. My question is if the MP3 player would have enough energy to power the speakers so that I can actually hear them while jogging?

The little amp in the MP3 player won't have enough juice to run a pair of speakers. (unless they're horn loaded Altecs or something :D)

Buy one of those little 2w amp on chip kits and power the speakers via that.

You could get some over-the-ear headphones instead of buds.

that would look kinda gay bro...as opposed to wearing a hat with a sound system while jogging...?
plus my buddy is borrowing the dolorean anyway...I don't think he meant radio-headphones

good one emag.

Maybe get one of those hard brimmed safari hats and have front, side and rear speakers for surround sound.

Get a couple of pairs of bud headphones and use the speakers out of the buds. They are probably loud enough for you to hear and everyone else not too. Mount two on each side of the cap.

I have a winter hat with headphones built right into it that works well enough. I don't know where you're from, but I got mine at five below (like a dollar store, but everything is $5 or under as the name entails) by me. They aren't the greatest things ever created, but might be worth a try for you.

I tend to think you'll never get any bass out of headphone drivers that aren't pushing air directly into your ear canals.
They'll end up sounding like tweeters.
My guess is you'll need at least 3 inch diameter drivers to get anywhere near musical.

Can you say Huge Fucking Line Array? :D Close-mounting of lots and lots of drivers in a line array makes the air move in one planar wavefront.

Grado made this monster prototype with 32 headphone drivers. I think they're 2 inches.

But yeah, you're quite right that when you take your average earbud out of your ear, you'll only hear the highs as it's no longer coupled to your eardrum.
