So I'm looking for some rap/hip-hop with a certain poetic quality to it. Atmosphere would be a good example, though I find his lyrics to have a certain superficiality to them at times. I really like the type of rap that almost seems to take cues from the blues; songs where there is a definite impression of frustration/doubt/cynicism in the words.

I'm really not into the gangsta/club rap (young jeezy, tupac--as far as I know, anything about booty/9 mm's.)

Help me expand my horizons.

Immortal Technique. I've always thought of Dance With The Devil as a poem more than a song.

Rap and Poetry? Kinda an oxymoron, huh?

That being said, Dance with the Devil is pretty Kickass.

Immortal Technique's raps are usually politically oriented/motivated, or what I would call a sort of poetry, I guess. No mention of laffy-taffy and busting gats and all that nigger bullshit.

Check out Mos Def and Common. Not all of their stuff is good, but some is.

You'd probably like most white, collegeboy rap...

Anticon (I hate them, precisecly because they think they are poets. But many feel them, hard.)

El-P

Aesop Rock

Everyone on Rhymesayers record label.

Some stuff that I think is poetic and good...

Living Legends (Everything they did from Almost Famous LP on back)

The Grouch (Specifically albums he put out before 2001)

De La Soul (This is a D.A.I.S.Y. Age!)

The Pharcyde (All you need from them is Bizzarre Ride and Labcabincalifornia)

Wow, thank you.

I don't know really know what collegeboy rap is but I guess you inferred that from Atmosphere. The only reason I ever really got into them is because of friends; I like the beastie boys too, though.

Basically I just want to expand my rap collection and all I know is gangsta and much mainstream rap is not my cup of tea.

I'm really digging Illogic, btw.

True. Fucking. That. He's probably the best rapper I've ever heard besides Immortal Technique, definitely the best white rapper. Btw, "Personal Journals" kind of sucked. You'd be much more suited into looking into his "A Healthy Distrust", definitely his masterpiece. I've included some of his songs here:

Going Back To Rehab (my favorite by him): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y49qzHpNAzE&feature=related

Sea Lion
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BffumeEaYOI

Slow Down Gandhi (his 2nd best song and the one with the most metaphors/wordplay):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yv1H197pL8M

He's a fucking genuis and I can't believe only one person metioned him in this thread. Look into him for sure, everything else pales by comparison.

No, the word is synonym.

I'm still an amateur, but here's three songs of mine maybe you'll like.

The Road.mp3 - 2.41MB (http://www.zshare.net/audio/52571568a7be1437/)

No Time.mp3 - 2.92MB (http://www.zshare.net/audio/527304373efb54a1/)

50 Feet High New.mp3 - 3.46MB (http://www.zshare.net/audio/52730837f4c1046c/)

I've got another song that's all recorded and I'm mixing it right now, if anyone's interested I can email it to them when its done (I've made a thread with my songs already, I'm going to wait atleast a year before I do it again, haha).

Actually, I covered him in my white, collegeboy rap section under both Anticon and "everyone on Rhymesayers".

He is the palest, compared to everyone else.

I also love how you two are gonna get hyped on two of his newest albums.. shit I almost respected him more when he fucked with Anticon.. almost.

There are a number of artists I wish to list, but I will only name a few, as this thread is quite long and informational as it is. From what I have read no one has as of yet mentioned any of these guys.

Typical Cats: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dSP5gwpU4iU
-Underground out of Chicago on the Galapagos 4 record label. One of the members, Denizen Kane, is a member of the spoken word group I Was Born With Two Tongues

Doomtree: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=toELT1uWDKU
-A crew of artists and DJ's located in Minneapolis who make music.

Dessa: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dgDpzOOCYGg
-A member of Doomtree, A professor, a writer, a spoken word poet, and philosophy major wound in to one to create my favorite woman currently involved with the hip-hop scene

Cecil Otter: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x7T6mnNX8rY
-Also a member of Doomtree, has more of a Johnny Cash feel to him, once a pro skate border, an accident brought him back to doin' the rap thing

Mike Mictlan: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-gZehXu9yhk
-Another member of the Doomtree crew, originally from LA brings the most traditional hip-hop feel to the crew. This track is off his collab album with Doomtree producer Lazerbeak.

Sims: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=563z3OqpHtE
-Probably the most political of the Doomtree crew, fucking great rapper.

P.O.S: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IZWYZLg0R1M
- The final rapper in the Doomtree crew, POS is definitely the most punk influenced of all the members, shown here in this song "POS Is Ruining My Life"

Kanser: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tjSSa77ow5A
-Another group from Minneapolis, composed of New MC (aka Zachariah) and Unicus. Real grass roots hip-hop out of south Minneapolis

New MC/Zachariah: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mGeZGFsZEEk
-A member of Kanser, Traditional Methods, More Than Lights, and a local Hip-Hop legend to Minneapolis. Once the host of Headspin Hip-Hop night at Bon Appetit in Dinkytown, well known and respected.

More Than Lights: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=glsRBDCmHWU
-Basically Kanser with a live band and some different tunes

Heiruspecs: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vmZ9umLuEp0
-A live band out of St. Paul featuring Felix and Mau'adib on the raps

Kristoff Krane: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6TijuW27lyg
-Yet another hip-hopper from the Twin Cities area, Kristoff Krane is a counselor, rapper, writer, musician, and member of Abzorbr, Face Candy, Sector 7G.
