I am looking for suggestions on laptops that I could get for under $500 roughly, something that is good for gaming, and other things.
SUGGEST SUGGEST SUGGEST!
Totseans, just do it.
You won't get a gaming laptop for under $500 I'm afraid. You'll have to at least double that budget to get anything halfway decent to play games on.

They'll play WoW and maybe a couple source games.
Get more money.

Will also burn the fuck out of your legs when trying to play such system heavy games.
But reidy does have a point, this laptop is fairly well and you do have better chances of getting a better laptop if you buy used.

What are your guys top picks in the low 1000's budget range? Thinking a 1300 cap. I'm thinking about a laptop for college, but I don't know if I should even be looking this early.

be looking this early.
It never hurts to be acquainted with the technology but if you're not leaving for school in the next 2-3 months then chances are there is going to be something better by the time you do leave for school.

meh, my m6300 will play crysis all day and the GPU will never stray higher than 47degrees.
I supose it depends on how decent your cooling system is.

^^ thats about right, CPU isnt amazing but its got a pretty top notch graphics sollution. (on reading some review apparently you can OC the CPU which is a massive + point)
this is a gaming laptop and should be bought if you have gaming in mind, obviously the battery life, portability will suffer because of this.
the sager np2096 is also a superb option comming with a 9600GT starting at only 900beans or 1100 with a better CPU & screen (p8400cpu & 1680*1050 screen)

I've always had good luck with the IBM Thinkpads.
As a matter of fact, I'm typing this on a Lenovo Thinkpad right now.
They cost a little more, but are built tougher, and last longer.
As an example, Ive always had Thinkpads, and I've never had a major hardware problem with them. (On an older one that I have, the removable CD drive was not seating due to a bent pin, which was not the fault of the laptop.) That was an easy fix.
I've owned three Thinkpads from as far back as 1995.
I still have all three, and they all work just fine.
On the other hand, I bought a Dell, which I ended up selling to the local computer shop when it needed major hardware work.
Take a look at the new Lenovo Thinkpads, and see if you can find one that you like.
I just bought another Thinkpad December of '08.
But if you want THE laptop to have, then this is it:

:p
I admit to being a Commodore nut, I have at least one of every computer that they ever made(Laptops, too.)
BTW, that is not my webpage that the picture came off of. That is Bo Zimmerman's(He call's himself "Commie") collection.
I call myself "SIDCHIP".
Those of you that know Commie's will understand.

Word. Im typing this on my beloved T-23. And i dare call it a gaming laptop, i can run a surprising variety of titles on its 16MB SuperSavage. Ive only had a couple dell laptops in my hands for comparison, but the thinkpad is solid as a rock compared to the creeky plasticky dells.

The old Dells were awful creaky things, but the new Latitudes (don't even touch an Inspiron...still) are built as well as the Thinkpads now. I have a D630 as my main laptop and a Thinkpad T41 as a backup - both seem to be built to the same quality.
You can find a PowerBook G4 12" for well under $500.
