I found an easy way to copy DVDs on my laptop, but in order to do this, I need to use DVD+R DL discs. Before I go out (to ebay) and buy this somewhat expensive disc, I want to make sure that my laptop actually has a double-layer burning capability. I just got this thing about a month ago, and this (http://www.sonystyle.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/CategoryDisplay?catalogId=10551&storeId=10151&langId=-1&categoryId=8198552921644586399&parentCategoryId=16154) is basically it, and it can play blue-ray, but does anyone know of a way to determine whether or not your burner can burn these DVD DLs without just buying the disc and trying it? Thanks for any advice.

Any modern DVD burner can use DL's - If its a new laptop and can play blu ray - I have no doubt it can play DL's.

My question though is why you need DL's to burn your DVDs? Standard DVD movies using single layer DVD's - which is what i've always used for ripping/burning.

I only need to use DL's when I burn 360 games.

I had a look around Sony's site but it's useless - have you got the Bluray drive or the DVD drive? Umm your best bet would be to head into Device Manager and Google the model name of the drive.

@DocShay: DVD movies are dual layer. Some copying software will let you burn to a single layer, but this is done by compressing the movie further. For a 1:1 copy you need to burn to a dual layer disc.

Standard layer discs have been fine for any self-created videos that I burn onto a DVD. But I was using a Roxio feature that would allow me to make an exact copy of a DVD (somehow it overlooked any copyright info) and the size of the disc that I was copying was 7 GB. It then prompted for the DL disc.

Thanks for the info.
