"Our democracy is but a name. We vote? What does that mean? It means that we choose between two bodies of real, though not avowed, autocrats. We choose between Tweedledum and Tweedledee… " - Helen Keller

The truth is, a government controlled by the Democratic Party is not going to change the situation for anyone--with few exceptions, it never has. They DO NOT work in your interest any more than the republicans work in your interest. They will still send the working class to war to die for profit; they will still take in billions of dollars from corporations at the expense of the working class; and they will still do whatever they can to keep corporation-capitalism running while the working class of the world gets fucked over.

You see, there's this myth that the "Dems" care about the poor and downtrodden and such and such, while the Republicans only care about the rich. I hate to break it to you (of course, I'm lying... I'm actually rather fond of saying these things), but this is malarky. Neither of them care about you, and neither of them are going to do a damned thing to help the working class.

Of course, the Democrats ARE better at placating the masses, which is why this whole "left vs. right" dichotomy in American politics has developed--despite being a wholly right-wing affair. This is also mirrored in other Western states, so don;'t think I'm just bashing America's infrstructure.

The Democratic wing of the republicrats serve to make the masses complacent; their wish is to keep the current system going without massive uprisings, not to change it. Sure, they'll raise the minimum wage--that is, if it's necessary to keep corporations from being nationalized. And no, they won't mention that prices will rise because of it, nor will they mention that a lot of people will lose their jobs.

There's no fixing a system that is based upon exploitation and oppression: you can't reform a television into a bottle of beer, and you can't reform a por-corporation-capitalist government in a way to make it benefit the entirety of the country. And that's what voting is: reform.

So please, spare me your trite diatribes about "democrats are better than fascists in congress" and Conservatives are better than New Labour such and such, because frankly you are mistaken. They're all the same, and only time will make that painfully apparent. We don't need rulers: we need to rule. People need to stand up for what they actually want; case in point: http://www.iww.org/en/node/4521.

Speaking of capitalism, though, I'll bet anyone right now that not a god damn thing will change with democrats in control of the house and senate; at least nothing of substance and no, universal healthcare or an improvement of the economy are hardly substanance given the situation they both lie in .

All political mumbo jumbo has always been a giant fallacy.
We give into their lies, and their false promises to make the world better. We as americans have been stuck in this web for what seems like forever.
We all sit and complain about how shitty this democracy is, and we all know we have the power to change it, but it seems like we would rather watch it all crumble then do something about.
The human race is a selfish kid. Immature. That is what we are. We become to consumed with ourselves then what we know is important. We would rather have a shitty government then have something negative happen to ourselves first.

As for the continuing argument between Republican and Democrat, that just proves to society how petty humans can be. Overall we know what is good and bad for the people, but they would rather send an arrogant asshole in the white house for eight years, who has no idea of government, then actually care about the people and their needs.
The arguments between both parties is simply ridiculous. It has gone on too long. And pathetic.

Excellent thread OP. I agree wholeheartedly. The American people have been duped into believing their country operates under a "two-party" system to lull them into a false sense of control over their nation's destiny, but alas this is not the case. In the end, Democrats and Republicans are one and the same. Voting one or the other in office won't make an ounce of difference in the grand scheme of things.

Democracy my ass.
