So one of my best mates recently went to another mates 21st. Now, the mate whose birthday it was, we all used to be really good mates. But over the last few months we have lost contact. And my mate who went to the party, didn't even get an invite from the dude who was having the party, he got it from a different mate.

Anyway, so he tells me about everyone he sees, old mates here and there. He tells me he doesn't exactly know how these people are feeling about the whole "falling out". We're all pretty much adults and don't really just flat out stop talking to each other. But yeah, shit went down and we aren't as close. So my friend doesn't know how they feel.

Fast forward to the next day, my mate hops on myspace and sees a friend request from a DIFFERENT mates girlfriend. (This different mate was never really our mates, he is more the mate of the dude turning 21. That being said, as far as we know he isn't a bad guy.)

So anyway, he accepts the friend request and realizes it's the girl he met last night who was with this bloke. (Going out for like, 4 years and live together). She sends him a couple messages saying hey and whatnot, than flat out, out of no where admits that she has feelings for him. WTF? You think?

*sigh* Girls like attention. A girl who has been dating someone for 4 years and jumps into a diatribe like that so quickly... feels like she deserves more than what she has. She's putting herself out there, probably because she got used to people hitting on her and wanting her and feels that her relationship consumed all of those possibilities. She possibly shares many or all good friends with her significant other and fears losing those connections when people see her as a "friend and family fucker" or whatever guys call it when a girl dates multiple people in a circle of friends. Most likely she's not a "terrible crazy person" beyond the normal nuts that girls are. It's still possible, because of how quickly she let her guard down, that she's bonkers. It doesn't sound like there was a big falling out to start the whole thing so I doubt that it's some trick of the couple, trying to sabotage personal relationships. The best choice, I think, is to have your friend ask " Yes, can you explain your relationship with him to me? I was under the assumption that you were in a committed long term relationship, so it's shocking to me that you're explaining... something else." and then work from there.

Mate, if your mate wants to get with a mate's girlfriend, and you guys aren't really mates with the guy whose girlfriend it is, then I reckon your mate should just go for it, mate.
