.. Thats right, 'Stuff'
Not sure if this is the best place to post, considered SotD but they're one step above conspiracy in my book (I HATE conspiracy)
While roaming the web I stumbled upon this (http://www.geocities.com/Area51/Dunes/1889/realv.html) pretty site. All the links are broken and it's hosted on geocities (testimony to the creator's stupidity) but I thought at least some of it seemed at least remotely plausible.
So my question this, is there any chance that ingesting blood can be beneficial for your health, prolonging life or otherwise? Would it make a difference what blood type it was? What difference would animal blood cause?
i'm not sure whether to pity you or just add you to my ignore list.

meanie. I'm not saying I believe you can live forever by drinking blood, but you might be able to process it and absorb nutrients and stuff. gez...

well, obviously it is pure shenanigans, but there was one episode of penn and tellers bullshit where there were a "vampire couple" ( who pretend to be vampires IRL) who drink their own blood by cutting themselves

Don't listen to all of these haters. Drinking blood has many proven benefits, like giving you AIDS.
But in all fureelzness, Human blood probably has a little nutritional value, I'm sure if you were anemic it would be a good sours of iron but otherwise not really worth the trouble. If you want human thats beatifical to your health I would go with a nice lean cut of meat like the trapezius, teriaki style Mmmm:D
doesn't drinking blood make you throw up?

People in many cultures have drank the blood of cows and horses for nourishment There's protein and fat in there..probably vitamins and minerals too.

At best, it's inefficient. Whatever processes the animal (be it human or otherwise) uses to convert food into its bodily fluids, there is necessarily some energy loss. Thus, converting this blood into your bodily fluids is significantly less efficient than just eating regular food.

The same reasoning applies to all meat, but with meat you usually kill the cow... Not required for blood.

The story of Dracula is based on Vlad the Impaler the Romanian king who impaled about 10 thousand Turks (and Romanians) on pikes while they were still alive. He used to impale people while he was having his dinner and he'd dip his bread in a bowl of the poor bastard impaled on the spikes blood. He wasn't a vampire he was just a fuckin psycho.

Well, the African Maasai tribe includes cow blood in their diet. Apparently they don't slaughter their cattle, and only drink the milk and blood. Wikipedia says the trend is waning due to declining livestock numbers. Some blogger pointed out that they do a lot of female circumcision and visitors have to be vaccinated for lots of diseases, which suggests they don't have the healthiest lifestyles.

Here's something about a Chinese soup called "pig's blood stew". Yeah, it really has pig's blood in it.
Lemon Curry replies:
For a crude breakdown of blood, you'd be looking at about 4% dissolved solids with (I believe) 0.9% dissolved sodium chloride. The rest is (roughly) 50-50 water and cells, with the majority being red blood cells...
a quick calculation (for human blood, but pigs and humans are physiologically fairly similar) suggests that, given that blood solids are mostly red blood cells and red blood cells are largely made of hemoglobin, you could roughly estimate the nutritional content of raw blood: there is about 150g of hemobglobin per liter, which translates to about 600 Calories per liter of blood from protein content, and about 160 mg/L of iron.

Although it could be that there's myth mixed with truth in there, I find something very fishy about the whole thing. There are numerous claims of witchcraft, sorcery, and Satan worshiping. And as Wikipedia notes, the confessions were made under extreme torture. It reminds me of the stories of witchcraft trials I've heard. Remember Salem?
Here's a forum thread with information about the conspiracy theory (one that actually seems reasonable to me).

horse blood was a common food by mongolian raiders. its actually a pretty good idea for someone trapped in the desert.
anyway, if any of you read a novel called "blowback" by Brad Thor, it suggests that rabies could be the inspiration for vampirism.
increases sensitivity makes people fear strong smells like garlic, as well as bright light, and their agression towards other people could be their tendency to bite others and fear of their own reflection.

So my question this, is there any chance that ingesting blood can be beneficial for your health,
Many, many cultures have or have had blood in their cuisine.
Spartans with their black broth (made with pigs blood)
The African Masai tribe.
The English with their blood sausage.
As has been said, it contains a lot of haemoglobin/iron, not to mention probably a wealth of fat soluble vitamins.
