View Full Version : Do you live with your parents?
The Great Flood of 2008

I'm 21, and I had been living "on my own" for the last 2 and a half years. Recently because of the fact that my roommate was kind of a bad person who made the rest of our lives miserable and the fact that I hated my job even more than I hated her I went about an hour south to a much smaller less happening town to move in with my mom and 13 year old brother.
The stereotype is that living at home is awful, but I can't remember the last time I've been happier. I don't have to pay any rent or deal with bullshit utilities so I"m actually saving money now.
I get along great with my mom and my brother. My mom is especially cool. She doesn't care at all that I smoke weed I just can't do it in the house, and if it's late at night it's no problem for me to smoke up in the den as long as I burn some incense. This is in stark contrast to roommates which, as a general rule, suck ass. Especially when you're living in a house and you have to deal with 3 of them. It feels great to know that my friends don't take me for granted and go out of their way to drive over an hour just to hang out with me for a night, and I really didn't have that confidence in them before this.
I feel much better physically. I eat a lot healthier, I've always been a better than average cook but now I really have a chance to learn a lot from my mom who prepares delicious healthy food. I'm in a new town so I actually do productive things like reading and exercising.
I'm glad I had the experience of living on my own because I met a lot of fucked up degenerates and got put in some fucked up situations that I had to deal with, and I gained a lot from the last two years but overall I don't have much to show for it and I realize that I'm a lot more rundown, cynical, and physically unhealthy than when I first moved out of home.
Anyway that's just my ramblings. Would love to hear your experiences and opinions.

I live with my mom. The only good things about it are that I don't have to pay rent, and that I don't have to clean up after myself. Other than that, it sucks.
1) I'm 20 years old, and my boyfriend isn't allowed to come over because my mom doesn't like him. You see, he would do things like clean up after himself, vacuum, and take out the trash, so my mom decided that he's not allowed to come over anymore. My ex-boyfriend, who my mom adored, would sit on his ass and play video games all day while occasionally pausing to torture my pets, and my mom actually had him move back in with us for about 2 weeks last summer to try to get me to dump my current boyfriend and get back with him. Talk about awkward.
2) I'm not allowed to vacuum, do laundry, or use the dishwasher, yet I'm supposed to help out around the house. My mom is convinced that if I use the dishwasher, washing machine, dryer, or vacuum, that I'll break them because I don't know how to use them properly and I'm going to burn out the motor. Yet she constantly bitches at me for not helping out around the house.
3) I have no privacy whatsoever. She literally comes into my room whenever she feels like it, and never knocks or anything. One day, this past summer, I was in my closet getting dressed after taking a shower. She tried to come into talk to me about something totally unimportant, so I held the door shut so that she couldn't get in, because I was naked and it was weird. Who wants their parent seeing them naked? So she keeps trying to get in until my boyfriend called my phone, which was in my room. She answers it and told him that I was crazy because she was trying to talk to me so I ran in the closet and locked myself in there and was crying.
4) Going along with number 3, she "cleans" my room. I keep my room fairly clean, but about 2-3 times a year she decides to "clean" it for me. That just means that she's looking for an excuse to snoop through all of my shit. The last time that she "cleaned," I came home to find a box of condoms, a bottle of lube, and a pair of handcuffs that had all previously been hidden in my closet arranged neatly on my nightstand. Who the fuck does that?
I'll think of more later.

Nope, infact I live about 8000 miles away from them. We get along well enough, but I wouldn't live at home for anything. I value my independence too much.

You're fucking helpless. Ever heard of a job?

Average age that people move out for the first time in the US is something like 26. That's not counting fucking up and having to move back in once or twice. The permanent move out average is probably something like 28.
I live at home because I'm finishing a degree and don't have time to work full time. I couldn't sustain rent, groceries, utilities, gas, etc. on a part time wage, and having to move in with roommates would annoy me more than living at home, not to mention distract me from my coursework.
I've had the opportunity to move out in the past, but it would have meant working a shitty job to co-pay bills instead of going to college so I could pay my own.
If I were just working part time and not going to college or helping out with various chores around the house and generally being respectful I'd feel bad about still living here.
It certainly helps that I'm under no pressure to move out, or pay rent, and that my privacy and goals are respected.

I have one. Unfortunately, it's quite seasonal and I can't make a living doing it.

Aren't you the one that was trying to get that really small house? How's that working out?

Yea, that's me. It sold, and the banks wouldn't even talk to me until I got a co-signer. I guess a 740 credit score means nothing when you're 20 years old.

Back with parents after living alone for a year.
...I liked living alone, however I could not deal with roommates.

I live at University now, but I've been back at home for Christmas and New Year (Going back on Saturday).
It's great having your own place, the people I live with are fantastic and I doubt I'd change anything. They all put up with (and try to match/beat) my noise levels all hours of the day and there's always something going on.
Yeah you have to pay, but it's a small price.

The school is fine, I just can't stand the 'student life/experience' or whatever you want to call it.

Live with parents. I'm 17 why would I not? And I will continue to live here and leach off of them for two more years during my freshmen and sophomore year of college. ;)
Living by yourself is extremely overrated.

My parents kicked me out the day I turned 18 and I'm extremely grateful they did.
Sure it sucked for the first 2 years working a shitty factory job to pay my bills. The thing is, I learned how to be independant. I saved up enough money to start my own business and now I'm an upstanding citizen.
If my parents hadn't forced my to grow up, I'd probably still be like most of you losers. Sitting around making up excuses for why it's Ok to mooch off of my parents. I mean where's the respect? Your parents raise you and pay for everything you need for your whole life and the thanks they get is you taking advantage of their hospitality.
Makes me sick.
