So hypothetically a friend of mine has an irrational fear of naggers and people in general.
He carrys a knife in his pocket at all times, the knife is clearly not a work knife but one build for defensive purposes and looks extremely badass.
The knife in question had a 3.25" blade and can be opened with one had easily, but is not spring loaded.
My friend also happens to be a minor and carries the knife with him to school everyday.
so hypothetically if my friend gets searched what would the legal consequences be?
I believe a knife over 6 inches long is considered a weapon. Most schools have policies about bringing guns, knives, bombs or whatever to the school. He would probably get into trouble. This didn't happen at school, but some kids made some pop bottle bombs and threw them around some houses at night. The feds were there the next day to gather evidence. Just best not to jack with weapons in public.

Im guessing by 6" your talking about overall length
By trouble do you mean arrested, because that would be a much bigger deal for my friend then him getting a suspension and his knife confiscated

A knife of any size can be considered a weapon. In most states a knife that can open and close, and whose blade is over 6'' long, is inherently illegal. It is illegal for a student to carry a knife to school in every state I know, regardless of size or intended use. If your friend is caught you can count on being suspended and arrested immediately. I'm sure all-boy schools down south are much more lax than prep schools in the NE, but nevertheless I'd bet you would be arrested

Depends on your state. Here in WA, you're allowed to carry a concealed knife, folder or sheathed, that has a blade length of 5 inches or below. Switchblades and stilettos are still illegal.

Concealed weapon on school grounds is a felony.

A knife on school grounds will get him busted period. As for off school grounds it depends on local law

In addition it can't be used for a violent purpose (don't know if that includes self defense)
