I'd imagine that the cases have some kind of alarm. How'd he get passed them? Didn't look like he was carrying anything.

Typically jewelry cases in stores like this aren't alarmed, and they only have a cheap lock holding a sliding wooden door shut. The nice thing about hideaway burglaries like this one is that the store's hardware department provides any tools you need, so you can walk in empty-handed. :) And the luggage and sports depts. provide all the bags you need for your loot, heh.
I think the police/news are probably heavily padding the estimate, though...$200,000 from a *K-Mart* jewelry display? Anybody here work at K-Mart, know if there's any jewelry worth more than $100 in there?

The article says how he did it you dipshit. He hid in a closet, smashed the counters open, and booked it. It never said the alarm didn't go off when he smashed the counters open.
Also, one of my ex's used to be a manager at K-Mart. They do have some expensive jewelry.
i always assumed that they locked all that shit in a safe every night. hmmm...
It would take a huge amount of time and care to lock all of the jewelry up overnight and put it back out properly arranged in the morning. Also, the more time the counter staff is handling large amounts of jewelry the more of it will find its way into their pockets.
I've never seen a department store jewelry counter with a glass-break alarm, but I have seen them with alarms that go off if the sliding doors are opened without a key.
It's guaranteed that the store itself has alarms, though. Undoubtedly there are glass-break alarms on the front doors, magnetic alarms on all of the doors to the building, and probably PIR sensors covering wide areas of the sales floor, stock room, offices, etc.
As soon as you started moving around in the store after closing the alarm would be triggered. You'd have to work fast and get the hell out of dodge, which is apparently exactly what this guy did.

there was a guy on rorta like a week ago asking about sneaking into target then hiding until it closes.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHA.
just sayin its kinda a funny coincidence.:eek:
yeah, and if they happen to catch you hiding, just say that you have narcolepsy and passed out.
maybe come up with a fake medical card that backs it up.
