View Full Version : Lacking a hobby?

So recently I decided that I don't have much of a hobby. I'm an alright coder (I do simple stuff for SA:MP, if anyone knows what that is) and I know my way around a guitar, banjo and harmonica but it's just gotten boring to me. I'm normally kind of a fitness guy, but it's winter in Pennsylvania and it's freezing so I can't really run in the morning or go mountain biking. I have crazy insomnia, which for me means I spend a lot of nights not really doing much but toying with Pawno (coding) or listening to music. I find that I'm kinda alright at most of which I do, but I'm not like really good at one thing as most of my friends and family are (my friends are really musically inclined and my family's more sports oriented). I'm really interested in building something, anything to keep me busy really. When I was little I was great at building with legos and whatnot but I feel I'm too old to be playing with toys and I want to build something worthwhile. Preferably this something could be kept in my basement (fairly large floorspace) and not be too expensive. I have no idea what to do, all I know is that I want to build something, haha.

Take up juggling, painting, firebreathing, chemistry, stencils, amateur radio high altitude ballooning, brewing, drawing, animation, holograms, cooking, safecracking, keraunopathy, or boatbuilding.

Juggling-I miserably fail at.
Painting-I'm a fairly alright abstraction painter, been meaning to get back into this.
Firebreathing-Tried with failing results, burned my lip.
Chemistry-Used to play with chemistry sets when I was little, uninteresting to me.
Stencils-haha, great idea. Never tried it
Amateur Radio-My dad has a background with this, maybe worth researching
High altitude ballooning-lol. Terribly afraid of heights.
Brewing-Done, and with very successful results may I add!
Drawing-I do this anyways
Animation-Maybe...
Holgrams-lol
Cooking-I've been meaning to start writing my own recipes
Safecracking-lol
Keraunopathy-After a quick google search this intrigues me.
Boatbuilding-lol

Even if you thought you threw some meaningless topics out to me, it actually helped me brainstorm quite a bit. Thanks!

Ah, haha. Err, yeah.

I'm on a development team for a new roleplaying server. Call it stupid if you will, but it's really not what many would think and I thought roleplaying was rather silly when I first started. Then again, I'm no LARPer or one of these fuckin' D&D roleplayers.
To begin it is important to figure out what type of coding you want to do. Taking a course on it at a community college is the best approach you could possibly take, if it were for a hobby. But, alas, coding has bored me and I'm stuck as the debugger most of the time.

Yr welcome. Tell me if you turn up anything neat on the keraunopathy, looks pretty fascinating.

Also Amateur Radio High Altitude Ballooning or ARHAB that I was going for. I've never tried it but if I was to build anything it'd be one of these rigs. People use them to take home photos of near-space!

Get yourself a pet. I spend mostly all my time tending to my four pet rats. Building shit for them and making shit for them. It never ends. And the best part is, the bigger you build their house, the more rats you can get!

It's super cheap too, I spend like $20 every couple of months.

I dont really have many hobbies, there are really endless things to do on the computer.

but other than that i like to read, watch the NFL, sometimes I take the screen off my window and practise casting (no hook ofcourse)

yeah.. u dont really need a hobby (if by hobby you mean somethign you put money into and you derive recreation for, like i would consider a hobby to be like making airplane models, but reading i would consider a pastime)

Work on some coding that is worthwhile other than writing mods for shitty vidya games.

Learn about electronics, find broken stuff and try to fix it, etc. I still need to get myself a soldering iron, but I like fixing simple stuff like computers and I've messed around with my fair share of PSPs. Also I got a broken LCD monitor at a HAMfest (for HAM radio / cheap electronics) for $10 and I figured out what was wrong with it and I got my dad to help me replace the blown capacitors (he's wicked with a soldering iron).

The monitor works now, and it's easily as good as something you could buy for $100+. I use it in a dual monitor set up.

Also, OP, where do you live in Pennsylvania? I'm in southern York County. A bit of a bumfuck place here too, no snow yet either .

Reading is maybe 2 hours away from here, probably less. I live damn close to the MD line, so I guess the snow just barely missed us. You live far enough north I figured you'd get something at least, but nooooo not me, just cold weather.

We should meet up in Lacaster and harass Amish people some time lol.

^Fixed. Amish throw the craziest party's.

I help companies set up firework displays for holidays occasionally. Its really easy to get into, you just need to be 18 and show interest really. Contact local companies and say you have no experience but would like to help out and learn. This gets you a bit of money on the side and generally the best seat for the fireworks. Lots of manual labor. Bring knee pads.

Other things I do a bit of:
Amateur chemistry, massive paintings, growing peppers and strange plants... like plants that contain compounds that are hundreds of times sweeter than sugar... or have numbing effects on ones tounge (you could grow hydroponic!), welding, homebrew beer/wine/mead, general DIY projects, currently tech class amateur radio op (taking general class exam this saturday!), a bit of random electronics, guitar, little by little preparing myself for if/when SHTF... and thats all I can really think of at the moment...

Other things I do, but not enough... or I'd like to do... including things that I could do if I just had a few more things to complete projects... or just havn't taken the time to really start in... or that I don't have the money, time, and/or space for:
Metal casting/forging, wilderness survival (fire starting, shelter, water, food, dealing with animals, etc), hiking, mounting biking, identifying wild plants and knowing useful things about them, photography... like long exposures of the stars in the sky... or car tail lights, lockpicking, shooting, working out...

The balloon thing is interesting. I have put thought into black solar hot air balloons out of trashbags, but never got one big enough to really lift off on its own... plus too much wind here. I need like a huge open area like a gymnasium and someone to help me work faster to make a huuuuuggeeee one... I was thinking more along the lines of a random wire antenna lifted up via balloon though...
