View Full Version : Black metal reccomendations?
I've never liked more than about 3 bands as of yet, but I was wondering if you guys could reccomend me some black metal that is similar to Samael (particularly on the Ceremony of Opposites album) or Satyricon's Diabolical, Now album (I've listened to a few other things by them, but that was the only one I liked)? Most of the black metal I've heard has been stuff like Mayhem, Emperor or Dimmu Borgir and I thought it was pretty shit, from the production down to the music itself I didn't like any of what I've heard, so please keep any reccomendations as far away from these as possible. But either songs or albums, I don't mind.
Thanks in advance if anyone can help.
EDIT: I have already tried lastfm and didn't come across anything good and pandora doesn't work in Australia, so that didn't work.

Well, Now Diabolical is definitely my least favorite satyricon album. It sheds the pure ripping black metal-ness for steady drum beats and slow grinding guitar riffs. Check out some of thier older albums, Shadowthrone and Nemesis Divina are two good ones. Just download the song "Mother North" or youtube it, that to me is exactly what black metal should sound like, to me at least.
1349 are one of my favorite new black metal bands, they seem to encompass all that new black metal should be. It's raw and heavy, but has good production, but isn't super polished. They also have the drummer from Satyricon, Frost, and he's an absolutely nasty drummer.

It seems you don't like real symphonic or lo fi black metal, so I'd say you'll like 1349.
Carpathian Forest are another band like that, they're pretty good. Marduk too, they're good. You might like Enslaved, even though they border on viking metal, check out the song "Blodhemn" it's one of my favorite songs. Bathory are another band that is black metal/viking metal. Belphegor are more black/death metal, but it seems like any black metal band that has some good production and good guitar playing get labeled that. You might like Gorgoroth, but they tend to be a bit lo-fi and noisy.
Darkthrone are kinda good, but I think they sound like a black metal punk band. You might dig it.
Immortal are an awesome awesome band. Thier album "At the heart of winter" is my favorite, it's real thrashy though. The drums aren't all blast beats and the guitars don't just tremolo pick dimished chords, it's way more riffy. Check out the song "Solarfall".
Enthroned are pretty good, they're a good balance of ferociousness without it getting too muddy and gross sounding where you can't hear the music. Same with Lord Belial.
And one last band, called "Primordial". They're like celtic/black metal. Definitely something different than the above bands. The song "Gallows Hymn" really sum up the band. It's a midtempo song, but totally intense.

I fell in love with black metal while working at a local record store.
The following are my favorites:
Arckanum
Throne of Katarsis
Bestial Mockery
Archgoat

I've previously heard Shadowthrone and didn't like it, just checked out a few songs off Nemesis Divina and thought about the same of it. Also didn't like that Mother North song.

Checked out a few of those songs and I didn't mind Sculptor of Flesh, liked it alot more than anything else by them I heard, but I wouldn't say I liked it enough to download the song.
Carpathian Forest are another band like that, they're pretty good.
Just listening to the song Carpathian Forest at the moment, I like this. Might have to download the Morbid Fascination of Death album.
Marduk too, they're good.
Had a look into them and all I can say I liked about them was the cover to Fuck Me Jesus.
You might like Enslaved, even though they border on viking metal, check out the song "Blodhemn" it's one of my favorite songs.
Those guys I'd heard of before, accidentally came across them when looking for an Entombed album, can't say I was impressed at all.
Bathory are another band that is black metal/viking metal.
I don't mind a bit of Bathory, but so far I've only liked Blood Fire Death, everything else I've heard was a real dissapointment.
Belphegor are more black/death metal, but it seems like any black metal band that has some good production and good guitar playing get labeled that.
Didn't really like them either.
You might like Gorgoroth, but they tend to be a bit lo-fi and noisy.
Had a look but the only song I thought was alright was Carving A Giant, I only liked a few parts of the song, but the other songs I couldn't stand.
Darkthrone are kinda good, but I think they sound like a black metal punk band. You might dig it.

Solarfall wasn't too bad, to a certain degree it kinda reminded me of Iron Maiden at parts. But couldn't stand anything else by them.
Enthroned are pretty good, they're a good balance of ferociousness without it getting too muddy and gross sounding where you can't hear the music. Same with Lord Belial.
Didn't like Enthroned, but Lord Belial wasn't bad, liked the song Mark of The Beast. What's an album by them you'd reccomend?

Gallows Hymn wasn't too bad, but not the kinda thing I like.
Thanks for those bands anyways man, I'll definately be looking into more Lord Belial, Carpathian Forest and Darkthrone.
Now to get onto the other guys bands...

Couldn't stand anything by any of those bands, but thanks anyways.

Fuck me jesus is such a good album cover.
But, I'm not a huge fan of darkthrone myself, the guitar is just punk rock guitar with blast beats behind them. I only have a couple songs behind them. Lord Belial are a band I just got into, so I'm not really sure of thier better albums.
But, if you liked solarfall by immortal, you'll probably like the album that song is on "At the Heart of Winter". All the songs on that album have that thrashy black metal sound, which is pretty unlike the other immortal albums. On like, blizzard beasts, I love the album, but the songs just get too wild and out of control to really make any sense. Even Abbath said recording that album was a disaster, because they were just trying to play way faster than they could.
Carpathian Forest are sweet, but I could never see them live. Thier lead singer is this tiny dude, and they have a bassist who weighs like 300lbs. I can't watch a fat guy wearing corpsepaint play bass.
Check out the song "Bloody fucking necro hell". I love that song. "NUCLEAR FUCK-ING DEATH MA-CHINE!"

For Darkthrone, I'd recommend 'The Cult is Alive' and onwards.
Khold, is a black metal band which has harsher vocals than current Satyricon, however utilizes the same groovy-ness of current Satyricon guitar and drum tracks.
If you haven't heard the song Tyrants by Immortal, I'd suggest you do so.
Mgła, a Polish one-man band, put an album out this year; predominantly down-tempo black metal.
A Dead Poem by Rotting Christ is a pretty decent melodic black/gothic metal album. My favourite from them.
Not too sure if it's up your alley, but try Watain's Sworn to the Dark.
This one is a little different; Woods of Ypres's III: The Deepest Roots and Darkest Blues. A melodic black metal band from Canada. Uses clean and harsh vocals and has a generally different tone than most black metal. Try it out. If you want to check out a few songs try, The Northern Cold, Your Ontario Town is a Burial Ground, and Distractions of Living Alone.

That album is shitty. Skip this and get 'Pursuit of the Sun and Allure of the Earth' and 'Against the Seasons: Cold Winter Songs from the Dead Summer Heat '. Also check out some of Ulver's early stuff.

Why not all of them? Let EssJay determine which is shitty.

I dunno why, but that part just made me think of power metal (probably because alot of power metal fans seem to be quite fat), but it gave me a hilarious mental picture and a good laugh.

I'll check that album out, I heard Too Old Too Cold last night and thought it wasn't fuckin' bad at all.

That song wasn't bad, but I dunno, it wasn't able to hold my interest. I just haven't been impressed by Immortal at all.

Didn't like that.

Another album I'll be looking into, the songs A Dead Poem and Sorrowful Farewell had some cool riffs in them.

Nah, wasn't up my alley.

I checked out a few songs from Pursuit, didn't really like them either, they sounded too samey to me. For a few seconds I thought I was listening to the same song again. Ulver I didn't like either.

Absu I thought was funny as fuck, but pretty goddamn awful. Mananna or what ever it was called was so bad that it was hilarious, I nearly fell off my chair laughing. Melechesh weren't too bad though, I liked what I heard from the Djinn and Sphynx albums, so I might check them out. Thanks.

If you're into melodic riffs but not symphonic elements, then Dissection might be what you're looking for. All around solid band and their music doesn't have the same scratchy distorted sound you'd find with bands like Darkthrone. Download Where the Dead Angels lie . Behemoth is also prime, but much of their later work is more death metal oriented

I second both of these.

I've tried listening to Behemoth before and didn't really like them.
I thought Where Angels Lie wasn't a bad song at all, I might download it. Is the album Storm of The Light's Bane any good?
