I recently bought an ipod touch and was wondering what would jailbreaking give me? i mean, what does it do? do you benefit from jailbreaking or does it complicate stuff? if anyone was a website with some info or knows what jailbreaking is all about just post here id appreciate it very much! :)

I was wondering the same thing but after googling around I found that its just a way for you to run third party apps on your iPod.

Apple caught onto this and instead of trying to stop people doing it then they opened the app store for the 2.2 firmware.

As far as I can tell there isn't much point in jailbreaking unless you want to change the background or something.

I think thats right anyway, someone correct me if i'm wrong.

I bought one pretty soon after they came out, and jailbroke it. Jailbreaking it turned it from a pretty nice device, into something really useful.

I installed:
Application to let me read ebooks.
Dictionary/Thesaurus/Translator.
New navigation system.
NES emulator
Sega emulator
Handful of games
Compass
Torch
Google maps/everything else the iPhone has.
Hacked the calendar to allow events to be added.
A decent notepad.
P2P software.
A few other things as well.


I really like my dictionary/translator feature. I don't think the new store has that for purchase. Could be wrong though. If they had that then I would consider upgrading.

It is a pretty meager amount of money to upgrade, however I use the dictionary quite allot. The way I see it is, I enjoy the device more with my jailbroken apps than I would with the purchased ones.
