Find a common interest or point of view to have conversations about. Happy ones though. Unless they like to complain, of course.

I find the easiest way to 'break the ice' is to point something humorous out about the surroundings.

"That blah blah sort of reminds you of one of those blah bleh blahs."

Remember not to laugh at your own joke. That makes you look like a jackass. Smile a bit, or just simply radiate a good mood.
