View Full Version : DIY Leaving society?
Hi, I'll start by saying that when I turn 25 I gain access to a trust fund that has around $75,000 in it for whatever use I see fit. My plan is to use this money to buy a used sailboat that is ocean worthy and book her outta here to a tropical place where I can build a small cabin and grow weed and trap/farm fruits an vegetables til i die of malaria or something. That's the short downed version of it.
The first place coming to mind is micronesia, because of all the islands, but so many people live over there, I don't think I would have my privacy for very long, so possibly an island near Africa or South America instead. What basic supplies should I have on my boat to start off with to make sure I can survive? I'm tired now and theres much more to be added, but I'll add it tomorrow.
That's so crazy it might actually work.

off the top of my head i would have a life raft, a working radio, plenty of water, and any necessary tools to fix leaks or torn sails.
just a few quick questions OP. have you ever been on a sail boat? do you know how to sail? do you know how to farm? i am not trying to be buzz killington or anything. im jus looking out for your well being.
it sounds like a splendid idea. sailing off to some tropic island. living the rest of your life in peace. i hope it works out for you.

You're going to be speared to death by natives like some modern-day, shitty version of James Cook.

OP, i think you need to read robinson crusoe. How exactly do you plan on finding a deserted tropical island where there are no inhabitants (i'm assuming you want the island to yourself)? You may have to sail for weeks in ridiculously rough weather to arrive and assuming you survive getting there, you will likely want to go home.
Like has been stated recently, I'm not here to kill your dream but i hope to put things in perspective. Wont you get lonely? what if a tropical cyclone comes around and destroys your crops and settlement (there are always annual cyclones in the tropics)? How will you protect yourself from wild animals etc?
You have an awesome dream and don't let me talk you out of it. I just personally don't share your optimism for the long-term survival prospects. Good luck! ;)
I have sailed before alone, I'm not too worried about getting lonely either, I'm just not the type of person who has many social needs at all. My extent of farming is a few weed grows before, I'm going to bring thousands of seeds with me suitable for growing in the tropical conditions. I will most likely have a gun with me, for protection, and possible piracies/robberies who knows. I'm also undecided whether i want to bring technology with me or not. I could bring a satellite phone with a solar charger just in case, but I think I'm just going to wing it and do what I can to survive without the world's problems.

As for supplies, maybe MREs. A year's worth http://www.efoodsdirect.com/. Just as backup.
Couple thousand feet of 550 paracord.
Sufficient fishing supplies.
Knives. Survival and folding. Maybe a few multi tools. Lots of knife reviews on here: http://uk.youtube.com/profile?user=nutnfancy&view=playlists

If you know any books/websites/resources for a total beginner to sailing, I'd like to know of them.
