When I first started this site, almost 20 years ago now, the idea was to have a place where all types of ideas could be spoken, traded, and exchanged, where no topic was off-limits or forbidden. At the time the site was started there was nothing like it. There wasn't a world wide web, Internet access was hard to come by, publishing new ideas was limited to paper, and publishing on paper and mailing out what you published was ridiculously expensive. After all of the effort, your potential audience was limited to a few hundred people.

Now we have the web, and anyone can start a web site or create a Facebook or MySpace page and publish their thoughts for all to see. If you want to be heard you can be, and if people are interested in listening they'll find you. Access is cheap and plentiful. This is the golden age of information.

I don't think it will come as a shock to most of you that after 20 years I am burned out. For the last several years I've reduced the time I spend on the site to the bare minimum – paying bills, finding advertisers, maintaining the servers, fixing database problems, debugging e-mail server problems, handling SPAM, and answering the occasional question or mediating a random dispute, but even that takes 10 to 20 hours a month. It's time to do something different. It's time for something new.

I don't know what that something new will be yet, but I know I won't figure it out unless I make a clean break with the past, so it's time to say goodbye and move on.

I am closing down the site as of January 17th. The irc.slashnet.org IRC (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_IRC_clients) channel #totse will remain on-line (I don't host it and I have nothing to do with running it) and Zok's BBS (http://bbs.zoklet.net/) is up and running and Zok says he thinks his equipment can keep up with the load, but this web site will cease operations.

So make your plans, set up a new rendezvous, and move on to the next thing. Thanks for the memories, it's been an interesting 20 years to say the least.

This website has literally been with me throughout the entirety of my teenage years. Never thought the day would come I would have to say goodbye.

I have been feeding off your site since I was in std3(grade 5) when i first discovered it. I was about 10years old, I used to save my lunch money which was 3 rand/day at the time just to get that R15/week to go to the internet cafe to get my 1 hour fix of totse. Throughout high school my every speech and project had some relation to the information on this site. Though i never corresponded much on the site itself i used the info vastly in my everyday life. I did and still do lack the confidence of questioning the totse team of experts incase i come of as stupid.

Now being 22 years old and working towards my computational physics degree i look back at the influence this site had on my life over the last 12 years: I mean look at my situation, I'm working as an IT guy at a satellite tracking company, trying to finish my degree which would've been medicine had it not been for the hack and Ka-fucking boom parts of this site, in addition to this i'm currently working on a way to hack facebook along with other friends who also have been feeding off your sites information.

Your site has thought me to find contentment with a computer, such contentment i haven't found in a girlfriend as yet.

Your site thought me that the greatest weapons of mass destruction are either your PC or found in your kitchen cupboard.

After reading your message i feel as if a family member has died.

Your site is what took me away from the boring reality off biology and unlocked the power and brilliance of the virtual world and hence programming. Here we make the rules, here we are as powerful,great and popular as we choose.

Such decisions are not made in one night. If you were going to shut Totse down, you would have spent a lot of time thinking about it.

20 years is no joke. A huge community, lots of textfiles, huge amounts of valuable information contributed by totseans.

Remember when I was making a Totse Calendar '09 around a month ago, and I asked you to take part in it somehow since I really wanted it to be a "20th Anniversary" calendar somehow? Well, you did, and you even posted the exact day and time when you made the first ever post on the BBS. You couldn't have not known you would shut down Totse then? The idea was that we would celebrate Totse's anniversary, not mourn it.


You could have at least given us a bigger notice.


What will happen to the archives? You can't let all this valuable information go to waste. After all you've done, this wouldn't be right.

For 5 years now Totse has been my favourite forum on the internet, it's truly unique, and I'm going to miss it greatly.

I wish I'd thought to post more when the temple was still alive. I never considered how much this site has shaped me as a person, from age 13 til 18. It's honestly been somewhat responsible for some of my views of life, and it's going to be a long time before I forget what it was.

I hope Jeff leaves some sort of memorial in the totse.com page. Maybe even leave the text files intact? Who knows...

Totse has been a part of all of our lives to a varying degree, and it's a shame to see it go.


All that remains to be said is "onwards and upwards mother fuckers!!!!!"

For the last several years I've reduced the time I spend on the site to the bare minimum – paying bills, finding advertisers, maintaining the servers, fixing database problems, debugging e-mail server problems, handling SPAM, and answering the occasional question or mediating a random dispute.

I'm hopeful you have put significant thought into this, and not making this decision impulsively. From my vantage point what you just described above should NOT be as mentally/physically/emotionally taxing as it is on you. Even after 20 years. If only you had the gumption and awareness to rethink all this and put BETTER people at the helm under you.

Seriously......if you had the PROPER people in the job of admins you wouldn't have nearly the grief or headaches that you do. People have been trying to point this out to your for a long time now, but for whatever reason you have completely ignored them. A great example of that is if you go into your M & A and read a thread titled "Problems with the Administration" (July 08') where multiple mods gave you countless reasons to re-examine who/why you have at the helm....and yet you completely ignored all of that. And that isn't just one example or thread of people trying to explain how badly this place has been mismanaged by your admins (and some mods), just one of the most notable. But again, you've ignored all of the other attempts of discussing this with you as well

Meh, chances are there is no talking to you about any of this, so putting any thought or analysis is pretty much a wasted effort. But the truth still remains, if you revamped just a few thing like...... changed some of the upper echelon senior staff and put just a tad bit more effort into better communications with your underlings....then you wouldn't have nearly the headaches you do now.

Sorry, but from what I've seen these last few years.... if you really are putting up THAT much time weekly that you described, then you only have yourself to blame for it.

Its been 20 years... whats a few more days?

Second: PLEASE help us preserve what totse is. I know jack shit about computers, but I know you have a recent copy of all that is totse saved. Please!!!!! Make this available for users to download. I've posted SOOO much stuff on this site over the last 5...6... years.. im not even sure how long ive been here. But it would be evil of you to just throw all that stuff down the drain. I can say that myself, and many members of totse would like to download a hard copy of the temple... to remember the old times. If it is possible, please make this available for the posters of totse who do not understand how computers work. I beg of you...

Third: Try and find someone to take over your place as admin. What are you going to do with all the equipment that keeps totse running? Sell it? On the one hand, I'm pissed at Jeff that would just cut us all off like that without giving anyone else the opportunity to take the site up.

On the other hand, I feel I have no right to be pissed at him because he's provided us this awesome site free of charge and it's his site and he can do whatever he wants with it. I've learned more from this site than I have from anywhere else, and I'm immensely grateful for that.

On the third hand, I know my grades will probably improve now that I won't have &T to browse while I'm supposed to be working on schoolwork.

This is a historical site as well, and if historical buildings are worth preserving, then why not websites, especially those with utility like Totse?

If you need money, set up a PayPal account and have a money bomb. A lot of people would give five or ten bucks.

I am at a loss for words. This place has been awesome, to say the least. I'm glad Zok has his site. Goodbye totse, the site. But hello to the new beginning. Totse will never be gone.

I hope that this is not my last post on Totse.

I lurked for three years, waiting for the regs to open, and I had planned to be here for many years to come.

Being that even the mods are surprised at this, I'm willing to guess that while being considered for quite sometime, a final judgment to put and end to TOTSE was made with haste.

I'm not sure what the final time is supposed to be that the plug is pulled, but I'm trusting that cooler heads will prevail, and I will be able to load TOTSE on Sunday.

I'm asking for the hierarchy to at least give it a week or so, for whatever circumstances finally drove them to this decision, to pass and look at the situation through non-muddled eyes.

Here is to you, my fellow Templar's. Lets hope that this is not the last time that we speak. :(

My best estimate is around 3-4 hours or so from now. It would be time zone related when it went down, and thats only assuming it goes down at midnight in that time zone. I believe the server is in California, so thats where my estimate comes from.

Yeah, I see it too. And while I find it great, it will just make it a little sadder when the site does finally go offline. At least it goes out with us remembering it how we used to remember it.

This is a dick move, Jeff. If you want to cut ties, cut ties. You'll
still have ties, you just will have burnt the thing they tie you to to
the ground. Sell the domain name and hand the database over to someone,
and then move on.

There's barely any free speech on the net anymore. It's gotten
centralized and commercialized. If Facebook or Myspace don't like what
you say, you cant' say it. Totse was unique in that it actually fostered
free speech instead of burying it beneath terms of service and other
bullshit.
