View Full Version : need help watching videos

First of all you should know that I am not very computer savvy. Often I can't watch the videos on this site along with many others that are sometimes linked to. QuickTime will not install because I run Win98 and I can't get Winamp or Windows MP to play them either. What do I need to do to watch them? Is there a player out that will play any and all file types?
Also what is the consensus as far as what the best new PC is? I have been told to go with a Dell by a few fellow employees that appear to be in the know about these sorts of things. If I can’t get this PC to do what I need, I will be in the market for a new one.

Windows 98?
Just get a new computer. And Dell is a good choice. Make that jew Michael Dell a little richer.

Windows 98 or Windows 98 Second Edition (SE)?.
Win98SE should have no problems with latest Quicktime .
As for Win98 then the latest version of Quicktime will not run on that OS but there is still an earlier version 6 that should work.
Try one of these links:
http://qtinstall.info.apple.com/saba/us/win/QuickTimeFullInstaller.exe
Current working version 6 full install which should be all you need for all Windows platforms
http://www.hitsquad.com/smm/programs/Quicktime_win/
http://www.free-codecs.com/download/QuickTime_Alternative.htm
Which should allow you to play Quicktime movies without having to install the official QuickTime Player. It also supports QuickTime content that is embedded in webpages.
http://download.oldversion.com/quicktime40.exe
For the older version 4 which definately works on Win98.
Any probs just let me know :)

This is exactly and frustrating, but if you download QUICKTIME you will be able to view the video using REAL. Keep at it, it is worth viewing.

Save yourself a few sheckles and build your new pc. Not only will it be better than a dell/hp/Compaq/gateway, but also it will be way cheaper. Say you don’t know how?? There are “how to” articles all over the web. If you can tell a screw is tight, you can build it. I am about to build my new one, for less than 1k I will have a 2k dell. A reasonable pc can be built for as little as $400. Less if you are willing to use some of your old pc
I was going to start a thread on the savings of a home built pc vs. a factory build.

Glad it worked for you comrade, only too happy to help.
The only problem you have now is Quicktime hijacks your
multimedia settings away from the default media players
every time it loads and places entries into your start up
settings which can affect older machines so I recommend
using an alternative like winamp power player:
http://www.free-codecs.com/download/PowerPlayer_for_Winamp.htm
or Quicktime alternative:
http://www.free-codecs.com/download/QuickTime_Alternative.htm
Unless your happy with your current working setup of course in which case ignore this................ ;)
