On 13 November 2008, Carol Midgely was seen doing her let's-all-sneer-at-the-elderly-who-don't-think-foreigners-are-as-wonderful-as-the-PC Crowd-says-they-are bit in The Times:
I am confused by our readiness to excuse older people who come over all Alf Garnett because they are 'from a different generation'. I THOUGHT HUMAN BEINGS WERE SUPPOSED TO WISE UP WITH AGE...
Let's be clear: it's understandable that people who have lived through the two world wars and lost loved ones can be left with a lasting mistrust of former enemy nations (the Queen Mother disliked Germans, having lost her brother on the Western Front). And we should never forget that people like this were fighting to prevent the most grotesque racism and that we owe our forefathers a huge debt of gratitude.
This is PC code for "it's OK to take the p*** out of Germans, they're white like us".
Midgely adds:
But that doesn't mean that some elderly people don't sometimes say things that make you want to eat your hands with mortification. I'll never forget my friend's cuddly granny once remarking that she loved Coronation Street. And do you enjoy EastEnders too, I asked politely?
'Oh no, too many black faces,” she said, sweetly, “I see enough bloody darkies hanging round the precinct as it is'.
I love you, Grandma!
Midgely, however, and the old lady's grandson did not. As she says:
Stunned into open-gobbed silence, her grandson and I let it pass.
She continues:
A septuagenarian, who had seemed a lovely neighbour when I was living in London, once stopped me in a state of fury to confide that 'four coons' were moving in across the road and was there anything that I, as a journalist, could do about it?
What a very foolish seventy-something!
Imagining a journalist, for God's sake, would ever try to prevent our country being invaded by a vast assortment of folk completely different to us!
Ms Midgely adds:
Age Concern in North Wales was so shocked three years ago by the racist attitudes of some of those at meetings that it asked them to tone it down.
'WE ARE FREQUENTLY DISMAYED (SOMETIMES DISGUSTED) AT THE DISCRIMINATORY ATTITUDES OF SOME OLDER PEOPLE, IN PARTICULAR CONCERNING ETHNICITY OR RACIAL ORIGIN,' it said in its newsletter. 'We feel it cannot be right for an organisation such as ours to fight discrimination, while at the same time DOING LITTLE OR NOTHING TO COMBAT PREJUDICE AND DISCRIMINATORY ATTITUDES AMONG OLDER PEOPLE.'
One couple had said that they moved to Wales from London simply to get away from black people - though those weren't the actual words they used...
We're taught from childhood to treat the elderly with courtesy but when they say things that could land a younger person in court IS IT OK TO TURN A DEAF EAR?
I have an idea, Carol.
First of all, let's line up all the unreconstructed British dinosaurs, you know, those who lived and fought their way through two world wars and made this a country everyone else on the planet wants to come to for their free hand outs. And then we’ll get the PC Crowd, the brainwashed lemmings, the media darlings, the politicians, the immigrants and the fat cat businessmen to hurl anti-indigenous, pro-immigrant abuse as loudly as they can into the deaf ears of all the old Queen Mother-like "bigots"!
That'll teach our ancestors to be “racist”, by Mandelson!
It is curious though, isn't it, Carol? How our ancestors always seem to come across as so much better and nicer than us in every other respect than this artificially manufactured one? (Throughout all history the outsider has ALWAYS been viewed with suspicion. It is only in the last 50 years or so that the governments and media of the Western world have deliberately tried to demonise (and eventually criminalise) this natural fear of the unknown)
I’ll tell you one group who won’t be sneering at the elderly, Carol. The 250,000 British people who are leaving this country every year now right now won't be joining in with the pensioner-bashing. The ethnically cleansed tend not to want to take the p*** out of those who are unable or unwilling to flee the cleansers.
