The cdr logs (which never reveal what was said) are 'domestic wiretaps' according to the ny times. In fact they arenĀ’t wiretaps, never have been. Its mostly smoke and mirrors, international calls are 'domestic' and cdr records are wiretaps only if the reporter held onto the story for a year to coincide with the publishing of a book. Follow the money.

The new aspect of this was before foreign originated international calls could be easily listened to without warrant. Every president for the past 30+ years have been monitored under that program. Carter, regan, papa bush, clinton and now baby bush all did that - it was known. The new twist is domestic originated INTERNATIONAL calls were added. Should it matter who started the call - its international all the same? It was known by anyone concerned to originate the call to reduce exposure, so leaking this info did cause some potential problems...

The cdr stuff isnĀ’t that special, verisign sees most of that and they arenĀ’t a telco or govt agency (they offer peering between telcos, wonder why they got to be man in the middle for so much).

Cdr logs are sent to amdocs (israeli company) for over 80% of all calls so they can prepare bills. This data flies all over all the time, and people donĀ’t complain ... (amdocs was at one time *accused* although I donĀ’t know if anything was proven of giving info to the mossad). There is another israeli company that maintains about 60% of the wiretap gear in america (when calea got passed many outsourced). This company was also *accused* of giving tap access to the mossad via the admin backdoors they have in place due to service contracts.

There is far more that can happen and by far more than the govt.
