Remember we also fight drug and alcohol abuse with educational sources. Some might argue that educational sources used by the government have not improved these but they actually have. Teenage drug use is way down.

I think when people word it as crime fighting they are referring to...
Installed in public places or retail markets they can "DETER" crime
Fight terrorism (Yes fight...but I won't debate this with anyone)
How By:
Providing the police with leads
They also help communities by:
Helping citizens feel safer and improve the economy of a crime-stricken area.
